What are you reading? What was the last book you enjoyed?

I'm glad I'm not the only one that felt this way. I'm assuming that you finished the book. I couldn't get through it at all when it kept on rambling on about the lineage and crap. I told Adgy I wanted to throw his copy at the wall. I had a friend that recently finished it too and she said that she couldn't put it down. That still shocks me.

I did finish the book and Adgy almost has me interested enough to try the second. We'll see. There are a lot of great books coming out this fall. Neal Stephenson's "Reamde" will occupy a big chunk of time at more than 1000 pages.

Stephenson can't seem to write anything less than 1000 since Cryptonomicon, eh? ;-)

A lot of stuff is and has come up lately. I can't keep up.

I just bought Interface by Stephenson and J. Frederick George at a Borders closing sale. Anybody read that yet? It sounded great and I loved Snow Crash, so I figured it was worth the $5.

I haven't even heard of it. :O

Snow crash is probably my favorite of his that I have read. It's not that what he's written afterwards is bad, far from it, if anything, he has become a much more ambitious, but yeah, like I said, he doesn't seem to be able to write anything less that 1000 pages, which, um, yeah, makes his books quite difficult to get through. And that's why Snow Crash is interesting, he was able to write a novel revolving around interesting ideas, but it moves and has more of a sense of action that some of his later books.

Apparently, some people are referring to his upcoming novel, Reamde, as a bit of a thriller so that should be interesting.

Anyways, I still haven't finished the Baroque Cycle, hell, I have only read the first one and there are two more, which are also about 1000 pages long, lol.

And speaking about writers of ideas, China Mieville, also just released a novel, which I have yet to get my flippers on, which apparently deals with language and what have you. I am such a nerd.

I haven't read either of Stephenson's collaborations, but I have read all of his other novels from Zodiac through Anathem. I have enjoyed every one immensely. He is an amazingly talented man. Reamde should not disappoint.

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Bob Woodward puts together another incredible piece of current history. Good stuff for the political buff! :)

I bought a couple of his books at a Borders closing sale a while ago, based almost solely on what you had said about the man (and his awesome Swamp Thing proposal that we'll never get to see get made). Haven't read them yet, though.

Yeah? :)

Which ones?

You had to remind me of that, eh? :cbgb: Oh, what could had been. You know what I think he should write? A Doom Patrol series. He could totally do something really interesting with that. One can only dream. ;-)

The City & The City and The Iron Council. :)

You'll probably like The City & The City since it's combines mystery fiction and weird science fiction.

Iron Council and his two other Bas-Lag novels are interesting (Perdido Street Station and The Scar), but man, does that man love to go on political tangents in Iron Council.

I started reading Dune. Last time I read it was in junior high. Loved it then. So why is it that it is boring me to death now???

Just started the Keeper of the Swords series (first book Diamond Sword, Wooden Sword) by Russian author Nick Perumov. Silly title but really good so far, very dark and interesting fantasy setting.

Egan's books are often hard to find in the USA. I found this at Powell's in Portland, OR.

Arkansas - John Brandon

Good read. Slows down a bit in the middle but really picks up the last 1/3. Recommended.
