What are you reading? What was the last book you enjoyed?

I definitely recommend his stuff.

I was thinking of starting with either Heart Shaped Box or Twentieth Century ghost (short story collection). Which would you prefer? or is there something else that you would? I see he has quite a few collaborations but would rather start off with something of his.

On a side note, after seeing the list here and googling scariest novels, Turn of the Screw kept showing up. I tried it and got about a quarter way through the book and realized I had no idea what was happening. Maybe I'll try again later.

How long is your commute? I'm a slow reader so I'm envious of people that can read a book or two a week.

I commute from Burbank to Phoenix, so...an hour-and-twenty each way. Plus I do a lot of reading...uh...on the overnights.

Yeah. On the overnights. :)

Heart Shaped Box would probably be my recommendation as the first place to start. Although you might also want to read Horns, as the movie is due out next year. I haven't read that yet, but I have no reason not to expect it to be high quality.

Heart Shaped Box is a better read. Horns is kind of simple and the ending is undercooked. But, like his pops...some of his best work are the short stories.

Heart Shaped box it is. Just read In The Tall Grass (Kindle single) by Joe Hill and Stephen King. Other than the price, $3.99, really, really liked it.

Finished OSC's Ruins (Pathfinder Trilogy, Book 2) earlier today. This series (like most of OSC's work) is pretty damned brilliant! If you dig the time-bending or world colonizing aspects of sci-fi, I'd recommend getting started with this series by reading Pathfinder.

On to some humorous sci-fi! Tom Holt again. He's as brilliant as (if not more-so than) Douglas Adams.

Man looks like I've got lots of reading to catch up on, hopefully I can get another international trip together soon to mow through some of my backlog.

Tom Holt's book Barking didn't disappoint! Bloodsuckers and ambulance chasers, in the world of this particular novel, are not only lawyers, but werewolves and vampires as well! Lupine-human and Nosferatu is not normally my spot-of-tea, but this novel of good/milquetoast goaded by pushy chums into squaring off againts evil/perhaps just mean/maybe only just a teensy bit dead was an absolute blast! Rife with humor (humour?) as well, Barking is an absolute howl! Read it! Read ANYTHING Tom Holt has put out. If you can get past him calling cookies "biscuits," you won't be sorry!!

On to:

Really enjoyed this book and it had some nice scary parts. The ending wasn't as good as I hoped but all in all a good book. I just downloaded 20th Century Ghosts and am really anxious to read this collection of short stories. But I also got 11/22/63 by Stephen King. Anyone have any thoughts on that book?

Joe Hill has some nice shades...really learned from his pop. That being said, I don't think he has hit his stride...yet. And when he does, it will be magnificent. Reading 11/22/63 right now...AND LOVING IT. Vintage King, just beautiful to behold. I may stop reading when he stops writing.

Just got a kindle so Im reading through some of the freebies and an impulse buy.

Two Recent....

Pete Townshend-Who I am: a Memoir. Very introspective with a warts and all look at his life. He manages to also be very self effacing and critical about himself and his troubled upbringing. A very good read and by no means a puff piece or ego massage.

Dostoevski- The Idiot. Only half way through but interesting. At one time I made it my lifes goal to read all of the classics. I bailed on the idea after Jane Austin and Proust.

Will peruse this thread at a later date and read some of the suggestions.

Just finished Mark Owen's book, No Easy Day. GREAT read on the Bin Laden raid.

A story of between the wars European history, Hollywood, avant-garde music and weaponry, along with how the collaboration of a famous actress and a composer resulted in the U.S. Patent which ended up covering the spread-spectrum standard used in cellphone technology and encrypted communications.

Vigorously researched (albeit not to the level of his major 4 work series on the nuclear era, one of which won a Pulitzer), Richard Rhodes (fast becoming my favorite author) managaes to weave these disparate themes into a coherent whole and provides glimpses into the many personalities involved.

Finished 11/22/63 a few months back. Loved the ending, which is rare on a King book. I think it was one of his best efforts in a very, very long time.

Been meaning to read it for a good 10 years but whenever I've been in a sci fi mood with nothing to read at hand someone had already borrowed it from the local library. So I finally bought the damned thing and I'm starting right now.
