Here’s a question for the CBA people.. if Rob Blake needs to send Brandt Clarke down to the OHL in order to spare someone like JAD or Lias A from waivers, can Clark be recalled from the OHL further into the season, once Blake has figured out how to trade the surplus of forwards?

Per Dooley here’s today’s lineup:

Group A
Kevin Fiala – Anze Kopitar – Adrian Kempe
Trevor Moore – Phillip Danault – Viktor Arvidsson
Alex Iafallo – Quinton Byfield – Arthur Kaliyev
Brendan Lemieux – Blake Lizotte – Carl Grundstrom
Jaret Anderson-Dolan – Rasmus Kupari – Gabe Vilardi

Mikey Anderson – Drew Doughty
Sean Walker – Matt Roy
Alex Edler – Sean Durzi
Tobias Bjornfot – Brandt Clarke

Jonathan Quick
Pheonix Copley

Drop 2 more and it’s done. Gotta be Kup going down. I don’t see them waiving JAD to carry 8 D but never know.

no i dont believe he can. They either put him on the team, or they put him in the OHL. Once that decision is made (9 games or less he can play) then he's there for the season.

Correct. He could only return to the Kings once his OHL season has ended.

It’s gotta be Bjornfot and Kupari being sent down. Copley will get sent down also unless peterson goes on IR. If Clarke continues to play lights out and they keep him up, it looks like they’ll have to risk sending Moverare through waivers. They’ve also got to figure out what to do with Lias Andersson, Tynan. I think these three, plus JAD and Vilardi are the ones subject to waivers.

I think he can still go down there, but it burns a year off his ELC

Correct. He could only return to the Kings once his OHL season has ended.
I think he can still be recalled in an "emergency" situation. Whatever that is.

He cant then, subsequently be recalled though, correct? I think you're right he can still go down after teh 10th game, but he cant be shuttled back and forth correct?

Ultimately I think it’s Bjornfot too. Reign camp opens Monday but I could see Andersson and Fagemo plus Moverare and Spence sticking around the Kings camp a bit longer with everyone else going down. Fagemo and Spence to keep the pressure on Vilardi and Clarke especially.

Does anyone have any idea when Durzi hurt his shoulder last year? The most recent article on the LA Kings insider makes it sound like he was dealing with this particular shoulder injury much longer than I thought, perhaps even back into the regular season. I was under the impression that it was something he sustained in the playoffs against Edmonton. Point being, I’m wondering if that had something to do with some of his gaffs, which at the time I perceived to be -mental- errors.

If I recall correctly he can only be called up in the event of an emergency. I don't know what the criteria for that are.

While not waiver related, Bjornfot, Spence and Fagemo were assigned to Ontario today.

8 dmen in camp now

Anderson/Doughty
Walker/Roy
Edler/Clarke
Moverare/Durzi

Will be interesting to see if Clarke sticks around for just these final 2 preseason games and then back to OHL, stays with the Kings and plays his 9 games, or makes the roster and they put Moverare through waivers.

this tweet from Foxy seems to be pretty confident that Clarke is here to stay

From further down in the same thread, another good point:

Yep. Don’t think that the Kings see how another year in Juniors will help his growth. Plus they can’t protect him from injuries in Juniors either. Even if he doesn’t play 70+ games in NHL this season being around the team full time will benefit him. Especially with Drew around.

I agree with this take. The future is now for Clarke. Training and developing with the Kings is more valuable than another year of dominating in the OHL.

Repost of my post from another thread, since it seems more relevant here:
So...what if the Kings loan Clarke into Europe? There have been a number of top-end defensemen who went directly from Europe into holding their own in the NHL in the past decade, with no or very limited adjustment period to the NA ice and style of play. Hedman, Josi, Dahlin, Heiskanen, Klingberg, Karlsson to name the most successful. Elitserien in particular seems to be an excellent pre-NHL proving ground.

Thoughts?

As things stand, Durzi seems to be the odd man out. Which doesn't feel like the correct asset management...unless Edler will sit and someone shifts to the left side.

I personally don't see that happening. But I'm less informed than most in this conversation. At this point he's a coveted asset and the most likely path to development is in house mentoring. One point I don't recall seeing previously mentioned is that Blake as a player and defenseman probably has a special insight for developing him, so I bet that breaks all the tie-breakers about what to do with him as a contractual asset. Fox wouldn't have put that little blurb on the internet without some kind of insider insight either.

Durzi is more of a surprise chip in your back pocket at the craps table. He's had a good run, but you're not planning you're future fortunes around him. A good chunk of this board is already over his defensive liabilities. He reminded me of a Dollar Store Brent Burns.

They can't. The contract between the NHL and the CHL won't allow it, just like it won't allow Clarke to play in the AHL. He's either in Barrie or LA this season.

Ah, I see. Thanks for the insight to both of you.

He seems to be a keeper, then. Kurisu, you made a very valid point about Blake probably knowing well how to develop top defensive talent, both from his experience as a player and from what we saw from Durzi and Spence.

OK, so...trade Durzi? IMO it's pointless to keep him as a 7th D-man. Unless there's some LD/RD shuffling...

I think the kid has shown enough that yes, playing another season in the OHL will only delay his growth. Kid deserves to play a reasonable number of games in the NHL this season.
