Who will next year's goalie be ?

I saw on twitter Dennis Bernstein said the goalie choices would be Talbot & Nedeljkovic. Thankfully it’s Talbot since I don’t have to look up how to spell his name. Anyway, not the greatest goalie but he’s fine fo the price. I could see him & Copley being a tandem with him getting more of the starts. We’ll have to play better defense in front of them.

We did not do well in the draft as far as goaltending goes, I understand the top 2 were gone at 54, but maybe a move up was a possibility or not giving away that Montreal pick and including ours instead. Not bashing the Dvorak move, but goal should have been a priority. Maybe there is a young goaltender that still has not met expectations out there in the AHL, that we can take a chance on.

I’m going to disagree with you.

1. Shouldn’t draft for need. Should refrain from reaching. Go with best player available on your list.

2. Drafting a goaltender can be done successfully in the later rounds. In the great majority of cases the “prayer” /s won’t be ready to share the workload on crease for 6-8 years.

3. Very little movement up & down on this draft

4. Front office already made one bet on Eric Portillo when trading a 3rd rounder. Portillo still needs to grow into his frame, improve on technique, finish college and work as a pro in the AHL.

5. IMO the key with goalies is to draft one at least every other draft, in the later rounds and patiently monitor pipeline progress, as well as keep an eye on the trade or waiver route.

6. Rinse and repeat. Every goalie coach at every level on the organization should help with scouting the competition. Invest on scouting department.

So is Cam Talbot the de facto #1 goalie next season?

Who is Cam Talbot. Guess I missed that trade.

Battle of the $~1m goalies.

Performance incentive up to $2m. I didn't know that existed in NHL, hah..

Copley is 31, Talbot is 35. Expecting full tandem mode, then "big" signing next off season.

EDIT: Talbot has been a backup his entire career, but unless Blake finds himself a "true #1", I think Talbot is it.

Maybe.. He was arguably the best goalie for the Sens the past year. Not the greatest stats though, team defense must not be their thing. In previous years for the Wild he played pretty well. I think the best 2 of the 3 through the preseason are the 2 NHL goalies. If the level of play is close I can see Copely getting the nod. Though, that 500K difference could impact things.

Somethings gotta give, the Kings are 1.5m over the cap right now?

His .898 sv. % was only .005 below Copley's, playing behind a disaster of a team. That's really not a big difference, realistically. If it was .915 vs. .920, it would look more than good enough, but since it's below .900 threshold there's some eyebrows raised.

In 3 seasons before that he posted .919, .915 and .911 for solid teams as a 1A/1B goalie, and .923 in 17 playoff games through 2 seasons. Not bad at all.

He's motivated and wants to win. IMO a near perfect bridge option. The only worry are injuries, so hopefully we catch a lucky break.

I wonder if the Kings have eyes on Casey DeSmith. He’s a UFA after next season. Very respectable backup career under the watchful eye of new Kings goalie coach Mike Buckley.

Casey is 31. Current salary 1.8MM.
