Giving Fiala 7 years at 7.9 mil likely means that Kempe won?t accept any less and that is a lot of money to spend on two wingers. Still love the Fiala trade but it isn?t easy for Blake and the other GMs to operate with the salar cap?
If it was easy, we never would have got Fiala in the first place?![]()
With all due respect to Kempe, his production is quite far off of Fiala. His breakout season last year was at 54 points in 78 games, something Fiala managed to achieve in 3 seasons before his breakout one.
If he gets anywhere near 7 mil/year he can be ecstatic and it would be an overpayment. I'd say 6-6.5 for a long term contract or a shorter term bridge contract at around 5 if he thinks he can improve considerably in the near future, so he can get the payday later.
Day before yesterday he said they weren't interested in Fiala. In this article, Hoven says the Kings are looking into re-signing Edler, which if true surprises me.

Iafallo is a luxury on the third line. No need to move that cash yet.

One name who might be interesting to consider is Ilya Mikheyev. Toronto will not be able to resign him

Isn't he just AA part 2, though? Phenomenal speed but never quite produced like you'd hope.
I'd pass. Blake did exactly what I wanted him to do-- get a legit top-line forward to stabilize the roster. Now we can groom the kids on the lower lines without huge expectations to deliver right away (not that any of them did last year).
From the article
"The 27-year-old winger had a strong season for Toronto, scoring 21 goals in just 53 games including four short-handed tallies. The 6’3″ Mikheyev has blinding speed and a long reach, making him a perfect penalty-killing option that is dangerous on the counterattack. His offensive skill sometimes leaves something to be desired, as Maple Leafs fans will tell you he can’t always finish on his chances but there is still a valuable player to be had this summer."
To me he would be a better replacement for AA (UFA) with a better scoring and a much better defense
FWIW, I loved the AA signing and really liked him the whole time he was here.
Bottom six players right now (Lemieux’s space reps himself or whomever the heavy player is):
Iafallo-Byfield-Kaliyev
Lemieux-Lizotte-Kupari
Grundstrom JAD Vilardi
Who do you trade and for what because at least one has to go. FWIW Kings have 200K in cap space due to Hoven’s projections without Vilardi. And what, after all this trade him for a second or something? He should have enough value to be part of a larger package for a player, but who else goes in that deal?
