2023 Trade Deadline Thread

So according to Pagnotta, the Kings offer Tobi and 2 firsts for Chychrun.

They would have had to take salary back which apparently was a huge issue for them.

I don’t know why, they have been doing that for years and as long as they aren’t doing that past 2025 it seems like they can afford the hit to their cap.

100%. They played chicken and lost.

Yep. I was going to say the same thing in the Chychrun thread. IMO Armstrong overplayed his hand and all the suitors went elsewhere and he had to take what he could. Bjornfot is literally zero salary cap hit in AAV and only makes 70k in the minors.

Comments of "Kings were never in it" don't make sense when pundits had us as a great fit for a year and the deal was close/nearly done pending holdup issues.

Watching NHL network talk about Klingberg to other teams. He wouldn't fit on the Kings but 3rd party broker to absorb 25% cap for mid-round pick would be a nice move by Blake.

Side note: Has Blake _EVER_ made a trade to weaponize cap space in return for a pick? I cannot think of one.

JVR to the Red Wings per Friedman.

Edit: Retracts. Sounds like something else might be going on.

LOL and AZ ended up with what they got once the Kings moved on...OMG that is a big miss. Tobi and 2 first, is like 3 first and they got barely anything from Sens. AZ GM did not do right by his team. Glad Blake is willing to make moves that will improve the team.

Keep in mind, this is Pagnotta so....

"like "3 first"?

Ummm, you can easily (and more realistically) say it's like 3 second's as well. Those Kings' picks will realistically be in the 22-25 range...even in a deep draft those picks, historically, are basically crapshoots. AZ took the Senators deal because their pick could fall in the 8-12 range. Advance data metrics probably says pick 10 is just as valuable as two 25th overall picks.

Yeah. If that’s actually what Blake offered then it kinda sucks. Bjornfot has played 100+ games and had to go down this year to improve his play…even though the parent club only has 2 LD and one of them is 36. Wheeler’s latest profile calls Bjornfot a 7/8 D. His stock has fallen.

The firsts would be late like you said. Maybe Spence and 2 firsts would have done it. Chychrun’s the level of quality you’d give up a player of Spence’s caliber for. I guess they’re just really not ready to trade him at all at this point.

Armstrong still overplayed, don’t get me wrong. But not necessarily on passing that alleged offer by the Kings.

Maybe I’m just a biased fan who overvalues the Kings prospects, but I’m fairly certain Bjornfoot will be a good 5/6 defenseman in the league for years.

I’ll be very happy if so. But a 5/6 D isn’t getting Chychrun either.

Well, it seems like RB didn’t do much else at the deadline, so I’m not really sure how to interpret the trading of a first and the third for rental players. I suppose these new guys could be considered to be on a ‘two way’ audition, where by the kings get a good look at them for 20 meaningful games plus hopefully some extremely meaningful playoff games before trying to sign them to term. On the flipside, there is the advantage of the players gaining some familiarity with the local area, and that making them a bit more inclined to sign on for term, if the kings want to keep either or both.

The silver lining here is that it appears Anaheim has been so bad this season, that they were not able to move any of their players out for much of a return. It seems like Klingberg went out for peanuts, as did Kulikov.

With the dust settled, a little CBA info. We finished with $1,513,825 in actual cap space. (Not be confused with deadline cap space.) Among other things, there should be enough cap space to pay all of Edler's $750,000 performance bonus this year. If we did not have enough room, the excess would carry over to next year's cap.

Yup. Hilarious move on Klingberg. They essentially spent 6.5 million (since they are retaining 50%) for a 4th rounder, a career AHL'er and a kid who will probably never play in the NHL. Not to mention he probably added 2-4 points to their standings total hurting their lottery chances.

I'm sure they were banking on the 7 million dollar investment bringing back a 1st rounder. Whoops. Shambles.

I wonder how Johnny Gaudreau is feeling about his free agent decision last off season. And look where Calgary is without him.
