Guess the Kopitar Extension Thread (2 yr extension signed. 7M AAV)

Kopi is getting traded at the deadline for a proper NHL goalie and an extra roster player

No way.

Besides that something about a deadline goalie trade just seems off to me. Not based solely on last year either.

People are interesting. People think Copley is terrible - best win %. Kopi's gonna be useless, trade him. Top points, no signs of slowing down, Lady Byng, maybe best 200ft player in the game. Whatchy'all smokin?

Grass is always greener…

My prediction is 3x$5M per year.

John Hoven recently said expect the extension to be announced in August.

He’s already eligible to sign an extension as of July 1.

Retirement.
I was going to say the same thing, mic drop lates but since you have such a history with the guy, it feels mean piling on.

While I think Kopi is the epitome of a King and team player, I think the expectations of a huge pay cut are WAY off base given how much he's still producing. He's not running a charity. I think if he goes down to 7-7.5 it will represent a substantial discount from him. I think it's more likely to be 8-8.5+ with the main factor in all of it being term.

Since he's on record saying he wants to be a one franchise player, I'm sure the Quick trade has given him some pause. It's a pretty sh*tty deal to have to choose between your ability to earn your living and loyalty to the team. I just hope that they talk openly and have a game plan that works for both sides.

The reasons you've itemized are my broadstroke reasons he retires. He was a front row witness to Brown and Quick. He take his victory lap (that he f*cking deserves) and goes out in a very European way, before he's a bag of mushy peas.

Sidenote: He still looks like the saddest Captain in the NHL. Formerly Trevor Linden. Dude just carries that weight of the world (poor man), it seems almost (read: absolutely) unhealthy.

So you think that he goes from the possibility of making another 7-8.5+ million for two years is outweighed by team loyalty? Is that what you're saying?

If I were Kopi, and had that opportunity to make that much more I have to say that it wouldn't be a hard decision for me. Who do you think he's more loyal to? His single franchise...or his family who might inherit that extra cash? I know my answer.

If he still has the 'want to' ... 2 years at 6 million per.

He's made a lion share of 80 million dollars right? That's generational wealth. I'd skate lazy figure 8's into the sunset. But, guess we'll find out.

=)

Last year Malkin (good comparible??) got 4x6.1.

I'd assume Kopitar will get something comparible. I'd be way cool with 2x7ish

Was hoping for a bit more of a discount, but it’s only 2 years. Assuming the cap goes up, leaves us about $7M in space next summer, not including expiring contracts.

Maybe if he didn't win the Byng he would have taken a bigger cut.
