My second kid hasn't come yet, so I was able to check out Good Riddance at Borderline in thousand oaks last week.
That place is a trip. I drove by it twice by accident - it's hidden behind an apartment building or an office or something. I knew it by reputation as more a country bar. Between the mechanical bull hanging above the floor, the calendar with a ton of "2 step instruction" dates, and the square dance floor, you could tell. Also weird to have the side of the venue be windows looking out onto the 101 freeway. But, they served me the jameson and sodas in a massively tall glass filled to the brim, so thumbs up for that.
Direct Hit! from Wisconsin opened. I was super stoked to see these guys for the first time. The crowd reaction was non-existent. In fact I think there were only a total of about 10 people on the floor for their whole set, but I thought they were great. One member I did get to say hi to was extremely grateful for my buying a t shirt and LP, and despite the crowd response proclaimed he was just happy to be in LA and to be able to show his bare backside to the city at that "observatory thing".
Good Riddance was awesome. Hell of a lot more crowd reaction. They played what seemed about an hour and a half if not more, and a LOT of old songs I hadn't seen played in a long time, if ever at all. Venue sound was a little rough for the whole show, but take what you can get.
Overall, a very good time at my first show in a long while (and probably for awhile as son
#2 set to be induced friday!)
