Punk...

i know there's lots of pre/post misfits love and hate, but i still really dig this song

The Michael Graves stuff got me back into the Misfits. I know it is not the same as the earlier stuff with Glenn

****! 11 bloody pages, I missed this thread and it has gone 11 ****ing pages! And I only now found it because it was mentioned in a thread on Home Ice! **** me!

My fault completely but next time someone shoot me a PM and let me know.

In any case there has been so many cool bands and vids mentioned and posted, it really brings back a lot of great memories.

I have been in a foul mood the last day or two so I have been listening to Discharge and One Way System. I must admit I have to be in the right mood to listen to Discharge and I will go long periods of time between listens, but when I do, they do the trick. Something about how raw they can be and Cal's voice that is just cool. One Way System is the same but there is nothing better than cranking up Systematic Abuse or Believe Yourself when you are pissed at the world.

If I continue in my bad mood I just might have to crank up some Varukers tomorrow.

The band that I first heard that got me into the whole thing, the band infected me so that punk was soon in my blood and I could not stop even if I wanted to:

I may even have to post later about the night that I got to hang out with Charged G.B.H (I gotta put the "Charged" in there!) backstage.

Anyhoo, I will post some vids later.

Wow this thread's pretty damn awesome. It's like a master class in punk history. I can't compete with the knowledge being dropped about the punk originals of the '70s and '80s, so I'm gonna jump to the '90s and '00s, just because.

Since this is a hockey forum gotta give some love to Propagandhi, just because right? I mean punk that mixes in some hockey references? Hockey runs deep in Canada, even if your a queer vegan feminist anarchist.

Don't want to be the Steve Smith of the revolution. Do you see the analogy? We're the Oilers. The World Bank, the Flames! And just 2 minutes remain in the 7th game of the best of 7 series. Yeah, Jesus saves, Gretzky scores! The workers slave, the rich get more. One wrong move and we risk the Cup. So play the man, not the puck.

Not really punk, but I always lump in early Camper Van Beethoven with punk in my brain because the attitude and sense of humor seemed so similar.
Camper Van Beethoven - Take the Skinheads Bowling

I always feel really sorry for kids of today because what can possibly be their "punk?" What I mean is aligning yourself with music that seemed so outlaw was half the fun back then. The simple act of liking music that the olds couldn't appreciate was a safe form of rebellion and acting out. The Reagan-Bush years were a boon for the punk attitude since that leadership really artificially extended the reign of that Lawrence Welk, pearl clutching, 1950s vibe, y'know? Even during the Clinton years, as the country lurched forward culturally after years of stagnation, there was hip-hop (which wasn't really new but it was new enough for most of America to freak out about) for kids to latch onto as music their rock 'n' roll parents could not understand. But now what? You can't listen to any kind of rock music since it's almost all old hat. Hip-hop has been mainstream for decades now. Even EDM isn't that new since parents of today have seen it before as house/techno/electronica/d&b/trance. So what's a kid that wants to define him/herself supposed to do? Are we reaching a strange time where kids cannot freak out square society with music anymore? If so that makes me really sad. Blasting "your" music that nobody else could appreciate was one of the simple pleasures of life as a kid. What the hell are current kids gonna wax rhapsodic about on messageboards in 20 more years? Sending stupid tweets on Twitter? Sexting each other with Snapchat? Completely lame BS like Mumford & Sons or Macklemore? Jesus, that's grim... Sorry for the ranting. Being up late + whisky never equals great things.

This s**t sounded revolutionary when it came out. Now it just reminds me of all the nu-metal BS bands that aped this sound after. That really pisses me off.

More Canadians. No hockey references this time though.

they used to also make me laugh... :(

If you want a punk band that fuses in hockey (and beer), look up a band called Two Man Advantage.

Hard to find very many videos on youtube, but I recommend the songs "I Had a Dream About Hockey", "H.O.C.K.E.Y.", or "Let's Drink". For a trial: http://www.twomanadvantage.com/themp3s2.html

Citizen Fish - Over The Fence

I'm in a better mood today so I did not break out the Varukers. Played a punk playlist from the ipod and this came up. Great tune! If the vocals sound familiar it is Dicky from the Subhumans, actually Trotsky and Phil from the Subhumans are in this band too. So it is 3/4 of Subhumans but with a bit of a lighter sound.
