Punk...

Since we are posting somewhat strange "crossover" vids..................

So a while back I was driving and I heard on the radio that L.A. punk band the Bronx was gonna do a mariachi album. "WTF? Really"

Yeah, really.

They have done three albums so far. I gotta say they are pretty good, which is crazy because mariachi music has never been my thing. Its good when you are having a beer on the beach or restaurant and it playing the background, but but to actually seek out it out and play it deliberately?

But I gotta say that i sorta dig what these guys have done, especially this tune.

I got a few tunes from mariachi el bronx awhile back. At first I was like wtf is this, but then I was like "hey these guys are fun"

Ive seen them live a few times. Totally fun. I recommend seeing them if you get a chance...and have a few cervezas before. makes it even more bueno.

ya ian (ianmonsta) introduced me to them. more fun than you would think upon first hearing about them for sure.

Face to Face was fun saturday night.

Guttermouth was all I expected and more. Mark was as intoxicated as you'd expect. Their guitar and bass players ended up filling in on a lot of vocals when he was either dancing around, missing a part, or just messing with someone in the audience. There were also 2 young girls that couldn't have been older than 9 or 10 on stage singing every word to most songs. Seeing them mouth all lines to Lipstick was pretty funny, and trippy. Also got hit by a flying beer can (modelo 'espeshul' as Mark referred to it) halfway through the set which made for a nice smell on my jeans the rest of the night. They played about every song I expected within a 45 minute set. Lots of hilarious interaction with the crowd, lots of fast punk, lots of fun.

As I love Big Choice, I loved hearing it live in full. Trever admitted they played faster live and the whole album would probably only take a half hour, so they filled in the rest of the time with B sides and rarities (which someone next to me told me were the exact same from the prior night). Whatever, I was super, super stoked to hear "merry christmas" live as I love their version. Trever also comically noticed some peopel were mixing it up, but many appeared to be afraid to slip a disc or break their hip, then asked who was "40 or over", "30 to 40" or "under 30" in the crowd. The 30 to 40's got the biggest reaction (hooray for me) of which he was amused. The closed with one song from each of the two other albums for those who didn't buy 3 day tickets (You've Done Nothing and Walk the Walk). Great time, by which I sang my heart out.

Also, they brought out Matt Riddle to play bass for a couple songs which was a great treat. I was especially happy as I was wearing a no use or a name sweatshirt at the time.

Venue - it's been a long long time since I've been to this venue (since before when it was the Galaxy). They surely did renovate it quite a bit, whatever with tv screens, fancy lights and all that jazz. Seeing table service available at a punk show was really weird. I also don't remember having to pay for parking there. There was some kind of rap/hip hop show going on in the side room, which made for a good time watching interactions between the two lines waiting to get in.
I also found it very funny that there were people selling counterfit shirts for both face to face and guttermouth on the street before and after the show. I almost bought one for $5 on the way out but saved the cash. Also the famous "hoda" hot dog carts being cooked outside the venue afterwards.

Good times!

So I went to a local record store, one of the last remaining, and was delighted to find a rare gem....

Sorry it is so small, but anyway a great pick-up for my collection.

But then I was bummed that my favorite Conflict tune of all time was not on it, it was not a single. But I have it on vinyl! But had not heard it forever so here it is!

And man this takes me back!

the hot dog carts and counterfeit tees are relatively new. i think i first saw it pop up in november, but i don't go all the time so sometime within the last year the capitalizers have figured out that that's a good place to cash in. as i was leaving the united nations show in november, the lady outside was relentless in trying to get me and friend to buy some shirts from the band from the other show in the big room (i went to see UN in the little room), lol.

same here, trever asked who was 40, in their 30s, etc. they also played "merry xmas" and 2 songs off the other albums. i super enjoyed seeing them play all of don't turn away. i know those songs in my sleep so as soon as each song started, i sang along without even knowing it, hahaha. he made some comment about how there are songs they seriously never ever play and then that they weren't used to playing songs in order of the album but they were gonna blast through them and i think they did a great job. i think it took them about 45 min to play all of DTA and i could tell that they added some instrumentaion and (brief) solos to drag the songs out. the live interpretation of DTA was great. i'm so stoked i went.

we did not get matt riddle. however, trever made some comical comment about how chad was with them on this string of shows and how he'll never forget the time they were on tour after big choice came out and someone yelled "you should've stayed a 3 piece (band)!"

i debated going to see pulley. i had to put my daughter to bed first and then drive the 10 min to the venue (nice short drive there, lol!). a lot of the times, i will take care of home business first and then show up just in time for the headliner, but i ended up doing it early and showing up at 8:45. perfect timing. i had never seen pulley before and i actually liked them! i had no idea scott radinsky looked like such a jock. it was funny. DEFINITELY looks like a baseball player singing punk songs, hahaha.

i strongly debated going to sunday night's show, but i have seen unwritten law bunches of times (though wouldn't mind one more) and i'm not as strongly familiar with F2F's s/t so oh well.

i have pinback coming up at the same venue in february and then all 4 nights of the alkaline trio discography in june to look forward to. winter months are all about lazy homebody time for me. :-/

I read a review saying the theater was basically empty while unwritten law played, but filled up as face to face came on. too bad.

good call on scott radinsky. He used to have big sideburns that made him look somewhat punky, although he might have shaved. I still kind of wish I got to see them, but am confident there will be other pulley shows in the future. (they're playing sunday night at the roxy with ill repute i think, but maybe i'll get lucky and get em at the canyon club or borderline soon!)

alkaline trio shows should be fun!

ya, it's his build, he's tall and he's got a thick neck. no more sideburns so that doesn't help.
they are playing a free show in fullerton at the slide bar on jan 9th, but i don't think i'm going to make it. the venue was packed when they opened but i don't know if it's because people thought the show started at 8pm and pulley didn't go on until 8:45 or if people truly wanted to watch both bands. maybe people got wise to what time face to face would hit the stage and then timed it accordingly. too bad they didn't show up for UL, i used to really like seeing them live in the early 2000s.

Did someone say I'll Repute??? :D

What's more punk rock than getting invited to play on a TV show by the Rolling Stones only to go out there and go so balls out that the Stones decide not to air the show because they looked bad in comparison? Although having Keith Moon as your drummer helps:

I don't know how punk this is, but I went to see Less Than Jake/Reel Big Fish at the house of blues this past Friday night, and Reel Big Fish doing a 90's only set Saturday night at the canyon club in Agoura.

And it was a blast!

New album March 24th

Can't help it, I'm pumped

And a couple others I've been listening to lately...

haha, that's awesome! my first concert ever was reel big fish and blink 182.

i also totaled my old college car on the way to see less than jake at soma in san diego.

tonight, i will be seeing jim adkins of jimmy eat world playing a solo show at what used to be the detroit bar in costa mesa. i hear it's hipster landdddd there!

This is playing tonight at the regency theater in downtown LA. Definitely my favorite time, musically. I'm heavily influenced by the dc scene.
