Man, the season is already here!

Defending champs VS Manhole FC on the Sunday Night match of the week!

Let's go!

Appears the Brugman and Davis was a cap help deal for both teams.

IIRC after using this buyout the G's have one more available.

The Galaxy acquired the Discovery Priority to Nascimento from Seattle Sounders FC in exchange for $50,000 in 2025 General Allocation Money (GAM). Additionally, LA will send Seattle $150,000 in 2026 GAM if the Galaxy exercise the permanent transfer option on Nascimento.

Worries about this season for the G's.....let's start:

1) No Puig.....this is an easy one. G's are going to play very compact without him.
I will be surprised if Puig is back by October, and if he is back, my guess is he will be 80% Puig.
It's just too fast to come back.

2) Paintsil out for the beginning of the season. We are thin at the wings.
Strong chance Paintsil aggravates this injury at some point in the season and goes out again.

3) Reus....Can he go 90 or even 60 minutes consistently?
Add to that he needs to be more selfish and go to goal more often.

4) Striker by committee? Sure Ramirez will be the starter, but now we have 3 with Berry and Nacimento.
Ramirez has zero goals in the preseason, and Berry has 2?!?!?! Was hoping for more from Ramirez.
Can he fill Dejan's shoes?

5) THIIIIIN bench! Ramos Jr. Lepley, Wynder, Cuevas, Parente, Zavaleta, Aude/Nelson, Zanka
(Bench "bright" spots: Aude/Nelson, Wynder, Cuevas, maybe Zanka and Lepley)
...even with bright spots there is a big drop off to the bench this season....last season not so much.

Silver linings about his season for the G's....let's start:

1) Puig could come back in time for playoffs (Don't bet the house on this)

2) Paintsil and Pec have an even better season than last now that they have one season together under their belt and Ramirez reaps the benefits of the great wingers. Maybe even start crossing the ball into the box from time to time and use Ramirez height.

3) Reus can start and go nearly 90 consistently, and with Puig off the field, Reus pulls the strings like old times.

4) Stronger, improved back line - Look for Yamane and Aude to be fantastic. (Yamane wins defender of the year) Garces continues to shine with his first complete full season. Galaxy defend better on corners (from my lips to the football gods ears)

5) Micovic has his time in the sun and has a breakout performance between the sticks.

Honorable mention: Lepley off the bench scores 5 goals for the G's this season. Wynder shows he is MLS quality and not USL Championship.

Vamos! Galaxy!
G's up!

Nothing really to add to the above. I'm a bit nervous about scoring. Defense okay but you know SD is going to be out to make a point in their first game.

…and let’s talk about how INCREDIBLY GOOD “Onside: MLS” is!!!

Absolutely fantastic.
My respect for Vanney just continues to grow!

The way he sly sh!t talked about Becks.
Chefs kiss!

Thank you Apple and MLS for this!
It’s excellent and so on par with Drive to Survive.

Top tier sports docuseries.
MLS needs more of this!

Was “hoping” the G’s could pull of a 2-1 decision prior to the match. Yea, that was an optimistic stretch.

G’s looked slow, plodding, possession without purpose. Predictable. Looked like they were coasting. Looks like vintage Vanney ball 2023.

VERY few bright spots:
Yamane, Cerillo pretty much.

Average:
Pec, Fagundez, Reus, Yoshida, Nelson

Bad:
Micovic, Garces, Sanabria, Ramirez

Subs….meh, however Ramos Jr, and Wynder looked like they cared.

Long balls up Pec’s side is NOT a good season strategy.

We are still BAD playing out the back?!?!

“Maybe” when Paintsil gets back they will be better, but boy that midfield is disjointed, slow, and has zero creativity.

Will Sanabria be this year’s Cabral?
Not to crap all over him, but he looked completely out of place preseason as well as today. I’d start Wynder, Ramos Jr. over him.

Gonna be a rough first 1/3 of the season.
Ugh!!

Well that whole experience sure did suck. That midfield was BAD.

Reus looks really slow in person. Pec was visibly frustrated many times. Terrible cohesion in the back on SD’s first goal. Gonna be an interesting year til guys get back.

San Diego had a lot of fans at the game. Good for them. I unfortunately sat below their away sections drums and still have a headache.

My concern/question going forward with Vanney.

I doubted him for years (and rightfully so...read on).
He has shown however to be a good manager "when" he has the pieces that can play his system.
Hence how we got Cup #6.

However, when he does not have the pieces to play in his system, (See all the years prior to last year, and game one of this season) his inflexibility in changing up the system, formation, and players makes for horrific results.

Unless something magical happens this week at training, I think the G's are destined for back to back losses, and more losses to come.

Vanney's possession style 4-3-3 formation does not fit the current roster:

Reus is not a starter anymore....especially without Puig.
Vanney will continue to start him and the G's will lose.

We don't have wings (see Paintsil out) but Vanney will continue to put Fagundez (who loves to play central) on an island on the wing.

Sanabria needs a LOT of work. He plays like a 6, when the G's want him as an 8. He's not going to be Delgado instantly, that is going to take an immense amount of time for that to happen.

So what "can" be done?

Some thoughts:
I'd try Ramirez again at striker, and chalk up the poor performance to a abysmal lack of service.
Otherwise Berry can have the start....at least he is all gas....no brakes...and no finish.
Reus as a sub. He's good against tired teams for 30 minutes.
Fagundez moves to 10.
Cuevas or Aude on wing with Nelson at LB to button things down.
Cerillo stays as the 6, with Wynder as the 8.

Vanney has got to REALLY understand what he has and what he does not have.
Rehashing 2024 as a strategy will be a BUST.
G's have a TON of games in March...including tournaments.
The time is now to make changes. No more square pegs in round holes.

Well, that was horrific.

Garces injured, Sanabria maybe out for a long time with a collar bone fracture?

Add to that Paintsil, Cuevas, Yamane, and of course Puig. G’s are cooked!

Micovic does not appear ready for prime time. Either that or the whole concept of playing out of the back with the “quality” currently on the pitch is a fools errand.

Sure Vanney moved some things around. He gets credit for that, but continuing to keep Fagundez on wing (on an island) is wasteful.
Diego proved when Puig was out he can play the 10 well. Put him there! We have no 10!

I felt it was a matter of time before Vanney rode Garces into the ground, I fear Pec may be next.

Possession based football with the current roster is just not going to happen. Without Puig dropping to get the ball and dribbling up the pitch, the current players cannot connect the midfield to the front 3 at all.

Not to mention the midfield gets carved up so easily!

Two games now and Vanney’s solutions are:
Offense: Throw it up to the wings (they are covered)
Defense: Try, but otherwise GARCES Run!!!!!

We have zero transition game.
Horrible distribution from the keeper.

More injuries, more games, more travel.
Is it possible the G’s don’t see 3 points in a match for all of March?

Vanney has got to prove he can be creative.
Current system with this state of the roster is square pegs in round holes.
If Vanney cannot be creative in tactics the G’s will be chasing a wooden spoon.
