The Avengers/Marvel movies

I enjoyed Daredevil more than I expected to.

Not sure about the red costume, but otherwise I thought it was solid.

Yet, some are crying failure simply because it did not exceed the first one's numbers.

BTW, after living with it for a week or 2...it is fairly mediocre. Still better than the first one, but it holds very little in the way of surprise or awe. Not in a tremendous rush to ever see it again.

They did everything BUT use the word sassy there. I am already bored. Everything I have read about this property screams 'adult content', but I just KNOW that they are gonna neuter this and completely take any teeth out of it.

I worry the same.

Are we passed our Spoiler period yet?

Are we passed our Spoiler period yet?

Yup. But seriously, since you just saw it...give yourself a week. You will most likely feel as dispassionate/ambivalent towards it as I do. Seriously...flaws, who cares. It's criticism proof at this point. Why bother getting worked up over something that is nothing more that a running total of our cash going into Marvel/Disney's coffers.

Even walking out of the theater initially, I didn't have the same sense of excitement that I did after the first one, but maybe that's because this one met expectations and didn't exceed them.

I still thought it was a ****-ton of fun, but, and maybe it's just me...

SPOILERS

...things like the Heli-carrier popping up and just happening to have a dozen life-rafts were pushing a bit much, I thought. There were a handful of moments like that where it felt like they did something lazy because they knew they could get away with it. I know the first film was also big, dumb but I don't feel like they pulled that kind of crap as much. The things that happened seemed well within the rules that had been set.

That's really my main complaint.

I would have liked to see less time spent with the Hulk/Black Widow thing, but it seemed like a decent way to give both of them a little more screen time and, since we're unlikely to get a Black Widow movie ever, I was happy to see the Red Room stuff. I've always really liked Black Widow and wish we'd get to see more of her.

I also would have liked to see Hawkeye developed more, rather than adding a family out of the blue who also went completely undeveloped. I know Whedon was going for the fake-out Hawkeye death, but I imagine that going through those bits might drag upon repeated viewings.

The "dream sequences" were kind of clunky. I read an interview where Whedon said he didn't want to break them up like they did. Wish they'd have done it his way.

And the last complaint I'm going to put here is something that isn't really the movie's fault so much, but I've never understood why Ultron felt the need to have a body. At all. Ever. If he can live in the internet and make unlimited drones, why wouldn't he? I don't know. I also didn't quite understand what it was that Vision did to him to "lock" him in the body he had, or why Thor destroying his first body "released" him. I'm hoping that, like Thor's swimming escapade, some of the explanation for all that was cut somewhere and will surface later on.

Wait, one more: I was really disappointed we didn't get any surprise cameos. How are they going to introduce ALL OF the new people in Civil War without it being a huge mess? Was all excited to see Black Panther and left with blue balls.

Having said all that:

I liked the way Vision came about. The changes from the comics for both him and Scarlet Witch didn't bother me at all. I'm happy/relieved with the way things went for them.

Lots of good one-liners again.

The CGI in the opening scene was horrible at times, but all the Ultron stuff looked really good, I thought.

I mentioned the Black Widow stuff. Would like more, please.

Ulysses Klaw = pimp.

There's more, but I'd like to see some others comments.

Just to add in...meh. Seriously though, I guess the Heli-Carrier was sort of tied into the SHIELD tv show. So, if you aren't watching...like everyone, you missed it. Loki's sceptre too.
Klaw was swell(as Serkis ALWAYS is) but that felt forced in as well. You KNOW Quicksilver will make it back via the skin generator or some maguffin at some point. No way they go to the trouble just to cannon fodder him. Thought Vision came off well. Took too long though. And yeah, Ultron was more of a pouty child than an actual threat, but really the worst thing about this movie, which becomes more and more apparent is that it simply was a piece mover to get us to Civil War which will get us to Infinity War which will get us to_______. These movies are just too big at this point to 'stop and smell the roses' or tell the story, so to speak. It's just a content generating machine that neither lives up to the hype or disappoints. They just tread water. That's what this movie was...the most average swimmer dog paddling to tread water. Just wrapped in a crap ton of money. I don't need to see Ant Man, Black Panther, etc. Simply because I can pretty much tell you how they are gonna play out. But...like everyone else, I will go see these movies...because if you don't, there is something wrong with you.

pretty much yes to all of adgy's post.

I didn't hate the Hulk/Black Widow stuff, but it just felt kind of forced to me...and there was a little too much of it. Scarlett was pregnant and couldn't be in on the action as much so they gave her a love interest that wasn't even sort of hinted at in the first movie or any of the other movies she's been in? meh. Loved the Red Room stuff and some more insight into her past. I want more.

I LOVED Vision and Scarlet Witch. They were probably my favorite part of the film. I also ended up really, really liking Quicksilver...which I wasn't expecting, so I was pretty bummed out when he died at the end.

Ultron was great. I was iffy about the voice based on the trailers, but James Spader was so, so perfect.

The Thor stuff felt really choppy to me. He was pretty much comic relief and setup for future movies in this film. Whatever. Gimme gimme gimme Ragnarok though. I think that's going to be amazing.

I ended up muttering "oh god civil war nooooooo" during every Steve/Tony scene.

I dug the one-liners and the way they all teased each other throughout the movie, and the Avengers Tower afterparty shenanigans scene was probably my favorite scene. Although that slo-mo shot towards the end with all of the Avengers battling Ultron's army was A+. Overall, I really enjoyed it. I love the first one, but I think I liked this one more just based on the team dynamics now that they've been "avenging" together for a while, plus the additions of Vision/Scarlet Witch/Quicksilver.

Im in the group where I thought it was fun but meh overall. It was just a setup movie for the others that are coming and I know that but still wanted more. I do hope that they have a directors cut when it comes out, hopefully it irons out some of the choppy/forced scenes

I tell you why the DC movies are going to be more satisfying to a moviegoer and comics fan...Wait, I have a point, I do

Because NOBODY has learned the art of hitting average more than Marvel. That is NOT an insult. The old chestnut is that 'you can't please all of the people, all of the time'. Well Marvel has found a loophole. They have found the magical formula to give everyone just the right movie to leave everyone walking out with a content feeling. Not overwhelmed, not infuriated...like the oxygen high you get when the plane is gonna crash and you are sucking on those masks for dear life(so I have heard).
The DC movies...I have NO idea what I am going to get. If Man of Steel was any indication, we are going to get movies that will hit with some and miss with others. That movie generated more discussion than all the Marvel flicks put together. AND THERE WILL BE SPECTACULAR FAILURES in the WB/DC movie universe. Failures that threaten to derail the whole pack of franchises. And I will line up to see the delicate high wire act that they are trying to pull off. If nothing else I will actually have opinions about the DC flicks, whereas Marvel is about as safe and calculated as math. Seriously...was ANYONE awestruck by Avengers 2? Can you remember the last time a Marvel movie(besides GOTG) left you all full of that post movie enthusiasm that made you want to tell everyone that it was THEGREATESTMOVIEEVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! No. You buy your ticket, enjoy it and move on with your life. SAFE SAFE SAFE. Like a blue chip stock. That's why Edgar Wright got the HEAVE. Because he wanted to shake things up. But there is a long con in place and everything up till phase 5 has already been fitted with continuity restraints.
DC appears to have no such plans. Flying by the seat of their pants and making schtuff up as they go. That's wacky. That's exciting. That's why I look forward to their successes AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, their failures.

There were a few large plot holes that even my wife who has never read any of the comic books pointed out. 1st being after the raid on Strucker's hideout why would any of the devices, machines and robotic parts be left intact and not dissambled and sent off to Shield/Stark/verious goverments and well as not having all power cut off. They did not even show any guards dead bodys after Ultron started production let alone have info that the "Lights were on again"

Best part for me was the "possessed" Hulk vs Tony's Hulkbuster armor. Worth the price of admission right there.

adgy summed up a lot of it.

My biggest issue was how they seemed to rush a lot of things. Unless you're a person with a history in this comic universe, you have no idea what Vision does/is nor Scarlet Witch. They put them in these stories and just have a "eh, they're figure it out" mentality about it. I mean, it's rushed as to how Vision is actually created because they spend about 5 total minutes talking about the substance he consists of, but by using different methods to show you unrelated to Vision (patching up Hawkeye). Not only that, but what powers does he have? He turns robots green and can shoot a laser out of his head? Scarlet Witch goes from Inceptioning peoples minds to blowing things up and ripping them apart? I'm sure there's something that would explain it, but you shouldn't have to read through decades of comics to find this stuff out. It should be self-contained in the movie. Like jd said, these are becoming too big, too fast.

Another issue was the Hulk/Black Widow "romance". Didn't buy it at all. Not for a second. Just zero chemistry there and it felt like a way for them to get Hulk to go away at the end.

Oh, also a tiny complaint. This "Age" of Ultron lasted what...a couple of weeks? Some Age. That article jd posted a couple pages back about the villains being filler was never more obvious than this one. At no time did I really feel like he presented a threat to the team other than being able to hide in the data streams of the world...which goes to adgy's point about having a body at all.

Things I really liked though: Black Widow stuff (they REALLY need to make a damn movie), Hawkeye stuff (giving him a story and some interesting lines and things to do was great), James Spader was solid as Ultron, other little things.

Spoiler embargo over...

Totally agree with the Marvel safety/make loads of money. Is the two-hour X min runtime also mandated by Business Ops to have more screenings in a day? Can we guarantee SW TFA will be 2 hours 10 mins with Disney?

After all the fantastic BW stuff in Winter Soldier, the entire Hulk/BW stuff felt fake, like a big con to just keep Hulk in-line.

This movie is supposed to lead into Cap Civil War... with around 2 minutes of screentime trying to show Cap/IM 'butting heads'. Really? Total failure on that.

As for Hawkeye's magic family appearance, it bugged me that I couldn't place his wife as Linda Cardellini from... Scooby Doo. LOL

Actually GotG didn't do that for me, but Winter Soldier did (and they were both last year). Not saying that Marvel doesn't need to allow for more flavor, but I don't think the whole machine has gone off the rails in under a year.

Concur, though I liked other things, too.

I guess I liked this movie a lot more than most people. Maybe I was just overjoyed to have a couple of actual days off work, but I loved it. I'm tempted to see it again. If I do, I'll go to the Chinese again. Last year, it returned to being my favorite theater in the city for the first time since 1977.

As for Age of Ultron, I thought it was Joss Whedon's best motion picture and/or television work since Firefly. I haven't really read any of his comics, so I can't compare them to this, but this movie grabbed me right from the opening sequence. The cadence of the opening foray was so perfectly comic-book that I could envision the layout of the imaginary pages; and the crisp patter between the characters is what I have been waiting for Whedon to unload on the Marvel Universe. I don't think The Avengers quite delivered in that regard like Age of Ultron did.

Honestly, once the "two-page splash" shot hit (although the composition seemed more classic Defenders to me than Avengers? maybe it was due to the Hulk in foreground?), there was probably nothing that could have happened that would make me hate this movie. There could have been two hours of cat videos after that, just as long as eventually it came back to the final slow motion "two-page splash" during the climactic battle with Ultron.

I fully expected going in that Marvel's insistence on tying all the movie properties together was going to make this movie a wholly unwieldy beast, but I thought Whedon wrangled it with aplomb. At no time was I lost in terms of either story or character (or at least I either didn't or still don't know it); there was probably more depth than should be expected, considering the scant resource of time for each sub-plot; there was probably as much visual depth as should be expected, which is to say, a whole bunch; and, most importantly, there was just a lot of cool action.

Maybe the consideration of the Mighty Marvel handcuffs makes me appreciate the job done by Whedon and crew more than the movie itself, but, in this case, that oddly became part of the enjoyment of the movie for me. Also, like many, I wish there were more time allotted to many characters and/or elements of this movie, but I'll consider that a compliment to what is in the movie in this case.

Also, IMAX with laser. 'Nuff said.

I saw the movie movie on Saturday. Was really fun, although there were some flaws and I think I liked the first one better. That there were like three or four trailers for comic books movies leading into it really stresses the bubble that is just waiting to burst. The Fantastic Four movie looks terrible, especially The Thing, and I swear there were two other awful Fantastic Four movies not too long ago. Ant Man continues to look completely stupid.

I want my Hawkeye movie. Renner is a known commodity, make it happen. And this can easily be the movie that fulfills the need for Jason Batman to play Renner's brother in something, although maybe a comedy would be better. Good job finally giving him stuff to do in this movie.

I heard going into the movie that someone dies and it was getting ridiculous at how all the signs were pointing to Hawkeye, and then, ooh switcheroo. I actually liked Quicksilver a lot, much better than the other one, but killing this one does simplify things. Then again, the X-Men movies love to have characters show up for one movie and then never be heard from again.

They really could have spent a minute having the Avengers say something about the fact that these twins who were attacking them for half the movie were now on their side, especially the Avengers who weren't there when the change happened. Also, maybe the twins want to have a little conversation with Tony Stark after their whole backstory, but no, everything is okay.

The opening scene really had me worried for the movie, the CGI seemed especially fake and the action moments not set up very well, like the whole point was just to have that slow-mo shot of everyone rushing forward from the right side of the screen (used in the commercials). The rest of the action scenes were much, much better.

The Iron Man vs. Hulk fight also felt fairly gratuitous, although at least the throwing people through buildings worked 1000 times better than in that horrendous Superman movie. And I like that the Hulk escaped the cage that pieced itself together around him by going down, since I was thinking as it was assembling that it was lacking a floor. I am no expert on comic books, but it does seem that a lot of it is all about how various characters fight against each other, even allies (and there was a mostly gratuitous Thor / Iron Man / Captain America fight in the first movie) and then also how they combine their powers in fun new ways.

I think a big advantage the Marvel movies have is that the writers and actors have created uniformly likeable characters that interact very well, so having them hang out with Whedon writing the dialogue does not feel like killing time between action sequences. Really loved how many supporting characters show up, and I hope very much that with Downey wanting to hang it up, War Machine gets to move into the spotlight (which the end of the movie does suggest may happen). Don Cheadle could very easily headline his own movie.

Another big plus for a very extended finale, although the first movie built things up a bit better (I so love the moment when they finally defeat the big centipede thing and, oh wait, there's more of those. A lot more). Also, if I am a super genius artificial intelligence, I am having all of my attack robots concentrate their fire on the human Avengers. A bullet to the head should be enough to kill Hawkeye, Black Widow, and maybe Captain America, but let's just waste most of our time bouncing ammo off of Iron Man's suit, and bodies of Thor and the Hulk.

The Vision was good but felt extremely shoehorned and somewhat unnecessary.

I actually did buy the Black Widow / Hulk flirting, except for Banner being so 'aww shucks, she isn't really interested in me'. If you're really not sure that Scarlett Johansson is throwing herself at you, you err on the side of it being Scarlett Johansson. Black Widow also needs her own movie. Hulk does not - they are already 0 for 2.

I feel like Chris Evans deserves some sort of credit for taking a character who really should be as boring as Superman and making him so awesome. Winter Soldier was indeed the best of the Marvel movies. He did move the hammer a smidge, right?

I usually enjoy movies for what they are. This was a good movie, but the first one was better. My thoughts:

Loved:
? Spader & his wit.
? Hawkeye subplot
? Vision

Hated:
? Iron bots
?Twins accents
? No collateral damage (no casualties)
? No real danger
? Entirely evacuating the area that is the size of an island in two minutes when building are falling all around. Some realism would be nice.
? ultron was a weak villain. Not menacing whatsoever.
? Thor side story
? agree with hulk & iron man battle was gratuitous. But cool nontheless. How no one got hurt is beyond me.

For me, marvel is getting stale. I'm looking forward to ant man, however. This all off the top of my head. I'm sure there's more, but I can't think right now.

This. I still like the First Avenger the most with Winter Soldier very close second but Evans has really taken this character and made him real.

The shame of it is that when Civil War comes around, the reasoning for the whole split rings a little hollow without seeing these sorts of things. Having movie after movie where these superfights contain the loss of civilian live would give it more teeth.
