JUDGE DREDD Creator John Wagner Comments on New Film, DREDD

HeroComplex recently held the interview with Wagner and it can be read in its entirety here. He had a lot to say concerning the history of the character and how he’s changed over the years, as well as what he would have changed storywise. Regarding the Stallone-version of Judge Dredd, Wagner said the following:

“They told the wrong story — it didn’t have that much to do with Dredd the character as we know him. I don’t think Stallone was a bad Dredd, though it would have been better and lent him more cred if he hadn’t revealed his face. He was just Dredd in the wrong story. I envy their budget, though. Some of the CGI was very good, and the re-creations of the Angel Gang and the robot. The robot actually came from a [Judge Dredd editor] Pat Mills story and didn’t belong in Dredd, but it looked good. If the plot had revolved around characters like them the film would have been more successful.”

Now, compare that to what he’s saying about the Urban-version:

“The plot is about Dredd and his world. It’s impossible to cover every aspect of the character and his city – perhaps that was one of the failings of the first film; they tried to do too much and ended up with not a lot. Dredd homes in on the essential job of judging – instant justice in a violent future city. I like the actors, they’re well cast and they handled their parts well. Olivia Thirlby (Juno) is perfect as Anderson, the young psi judge. She gives the character a touching vulnerability. Karl Urban will not remove his helmet and will not kiss his costar.”

Lawsuit Over THE CROW Settled; Reboot to Move Forward
http://collider.com/crow-reboot-lawsuit/139903/

The reboot that no one is asking for looks like it may be moving forward. A revisiting of director Alex Proyas? 1994 Miramax picture, The Crow, was previously in the works through Relativity Media. Since the Weinsteins distributed the original through Miramax and had contracts claiming ownership of all rights to The Crow, they filed suit against Relativity seeking ?injunctive relief,? ie ceasing all The Crow-related production. Not to be intimidated, Relativity fired counter-claims.

Things haven?t gone particularly well for the reboot as directors have come and gone, writers have signed on and then dropped out, and principal actors have been offered roles but have ultimately left the project. In short, it?s been a mess. One bright spot in production is that both sides of the lawsuit have settled amicably. While the good news is that this brings The Crow reboot closer to reality, the bad news is that this brings The Crow reboot closer to reality. Hit the jump to read the press release.

For what it?s worth, I believe it?s sacrilegious to even consider a reboot of The Crow, just as it was more than unnecessary to make three horrendous sequels. Check out the press release about the lawsuit settlement below:

?The lawsuit between Relativity Media and The Weinstein Company concerning THE CROW has been amicably settled out of court, and the parties will continue to work on the film together as planned. In addition, Relativity Media has dismissed all of its claims against The Weinstein Company for any wrongdoing regarding the release and distribution of NINE, and The Weinstein Company has dismissed all of its claims against Relativity Media.?

Chew/Dicks Meets Mars Attacks(start writing your jokes about that headline...now)
http://www.bleedingcool.com/2012/01/23/chew-dicks-meets-mars-attacks/

The writer of Chew, John Layman, and the artist in Dicks, John McCrea are working together on a new version of Mars Attacks from IDW, coming out in June.

Both are known for creating absolutely outrageous atrocities poured upon their characters for maximum comic effect, and I have to say, it makes for a rather intriguing mix. McCrea also drew The Secret History Of The Authority: Jenny Sparks when Jon Layman was an editor – a run that actually cost Layman his job when he objected to the removal of Midnighter kissing Apollo on the cheek by DC corporate.

The comic will uniquely have 55 variant covers, each one representing one of the original Topps Cards set, from creators including Sam Kieth, Ben Templesmith and Eric Powell, and a set of cards collecting the new images will also be released.

The Return Of Dave Elliott’s Monster Massacre | Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movies and TV News and Rumors

Monster Massacre was an A1 Atomeka publication from Dave Elliott and Gary Leach in the nineties, featuring work from Simon Bisley, Dougie Braithwaite, Simon Furman, Dave Gibbons, James O’Barr, Kevin O’Neill, Peter Snejbjerg and more, followed by a Monster Massacre Special from Blackball with Kevin Eastman, Simon Bisley, James O’Barr, Kevin O’Neill and more, as well as Carnosaur Carnage with Dan Abnett, Brian Williamson, Nick Abadzis, Kevin Walker, Richard Dolan, Anthony Williams, John McCrea, Walt Simonson and more.

It’s been a while since we’ve seen such a publication. But now, after his stints with Radical and now Image, and a new comic Odyssey on the way, it appears that Dave Elliott is to revive the Monster Massacre name for a new monster themed anthology.

And that the creator list is almost full. Considering the pedigree of those involved with previous volumes, this should be one to look out for.

Probably from Image Comics…

Yes Please. Loved this title back in the day. Now if they could bring back Mr. Monster...

Ok Comic Geeks, get ready, CHRONICLE is something all kinds of special. Harry says so.
Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news.

...When trends come around, there's a few films that come out of it that are really what it was invented for. We've been conditioned to think of the limitations of the P.O.V. film. Cinematically, there was always a limited of grandeur, because the camera was always moving by human hands. Here, when Andrew telepathically uses the camera as his avatar eye view, this film becomes something to be in awe of. But when that gets amplified by other cameras recording things, the cinema of this film explodes and really makes it exciting as hell. As if every comic panel had a person with a camera there. And all those pieces became the film. And really big things happen. In many ways there are Kirby perspectives at play here. And I really really like that. A lot! As you can see.

Can not wait to see it again!

BEFORE WATCHMEN Announced Today With Azzarello/Bermejo’s Rorschach, JMS/Adam Hughes’ Dr Manhattan And Len Wein/Jae Lee’s Ozymandias (UPDATE) | Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movies and TV News and Rumors

It’s official folks. This morning I discovered that the Brian Azzarello/Lee Bermejo DC comic we heard about at Angouleme was going to be Rorschach.

I sent a few emails out for confirmation. Then this landed on me.

A full confirmation of the Watchmen prequel project from DC Comics we have previously referred to as Watchmen 2, Before Watchmen, with writing details, courtesy of the Wausau Daily Herald which I think may have slightly broken an embargo.

And it’s not the four prequel comics we’d previously reported, but seven. They include;

(UPDATE: USA Today confirms the artists)

Rorschach by Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo

Comedian by Brian Azzarello and JG Jones)

Minutemen by Darwyn Cooke

Silk Spectre by Darwyn Cooke and Amanda Conner

Doctor Manhattan by J Michael Straczynski and Adam Hughes

Nite Owl by Joe Michael Strazynski (and presumably Andy and Joe Kubert)

Ozymandias by Len Wein and Jae Lee.

The last is the biggest surprise, Wein was the editor of the original Watchmen series, and the co-creator of the likes of Wolverine, Swamp Thing, Storm, Nightcrawler and Colossus.

Before Watchmen will be scheduled in a similar fashion to Seven Soldiers, so there will be a new issue out every week of its run.,

Each issue will also contain a two page back up strip, Curse of the Crimson Corsair, by Len Wein, drawn by Watchmen colourist John Higgins.

So How Close Did Bleeding Cool Get To Before Watchmen, Anyway? | Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movies and TV News and Rumors

Well, it's going to happen. On the plus side, it's going to be an influx of interest that will hopefully drive folks into local comic shops. The minus side, well that's obvious. In the end, I think enough time has passed that this isn't the affront that it might have been. Some decent stuff as well as some crap is bound to come out of this and overall it will probably have very little impact.

EDIT: Deleted for repost.

Yeah, I'll be buying this. I dislike the idea, but those are some damn fine creative teams.
