The other teams thread

Ugh... Perry with the game GWG. That shorty, (wtf Montour?) and McD's goal off Bob's skate--two the Cats should've not given up. At least Tkachuk appears to have woken up...But dear God, FLA's pp... Damn near Kings-level futility- wait, that's Kompon behind the bench, it all is making painful, horrible sense!!!

This was a lot like game 3 in reverse. One team jumps to a big lead and dominates, and then the other team finds their game and makes it a nail-biter. I would be more concerned for Florida if they had gotten blown out again, but they did find their game in the second half. When the Oilers did that in game 3, they rode it to a game 4 blowout. The Panthers better end this in 6, and not giving up a SHG would be a good start. Also, that save that Bob made on RNH on that breakaway in the 3rd was very important for his confidence. He actually shut the door the second half of the game to give Florida a chance.
Before the series, a game 6 would have surprised no one, and here it is. But, what a route to get there. The only thing that might favor the Panthers is that the Oilers have had a play a do-or-die game twice now, and then travel across the continent. They have to do it again, and eventually that takes a toll.

Guess I jinxed it when said I wanted a reverse sweep for Florida before the series started. Sorry folks, Edmonton is gonna make history and we'll have to hear about how great McDavid is for all eternity.

Markstrom traded to New Jersey and Calgary will be retaining 31.25% of Markstrom’s remaining contract, which after this season, has two years left on a six-year, $36,000,000 ($6,000,000 average)

Barclay Goodrow is very upset that the Rangers "traded" him to the Sharks, because SJ suck.
He has a NTC. So the Rangers waived him and the Sharks claimed him. This is an instance where NMC is better than the NTC.

Predictions for tomorrow?

I think the Oilers have gotten in Florida's heads and defend home ice 4-2.

If there's a Game 7 it will be insane bonkers tense and stressful and I barely care who wins.

Regardless of how I feel about the Oilers, I have to say that, under these circumstances, should they manage to ultimately overcome the Panthers and take the Stanley Cup, they will most certainly deserve it.

I have strongly believed that FL would win the series since before it started. After Games 4/5 there is certainly some doubt.
I still think it’s likely that the Panthers win the series but I would not be surprised either way.

A couple things I’ve noticed in the last two games is that FL went off the rails a bit starting with Game 4. It appeared that they got back on track for the second half of Game 5. Whether that was due to them finding their game or the Oilers protecting a lead I can’t say.

It’s certainly been clear that the media/NHL is getting what they want with the longer series.
While I don’t believe the refs are actively helping the Oilers, there have been some pretty selective whistles and no-calls. Hard to imagine an embellishment call against the Panthers after all the stuff we see from EDM.
Again, I won’t classify this as the league and refs working to ensure that the Oilers win. I don’t believe they are “throwing” the games. But some of the calls and no-calls are curious.
That being said, I have been slightly surprised that it actually hasn’t been worse.

Tonight is a possible trap game for EDM. Maurice mentioned it a bit. From the Oilers perspective this game is a sure win and it’s all about going to Game 7.
I think back to the series vs SJ when the Kings came back from the 0-3 deficit. Game 5 in SJ was the deciding game.
The difference I see is that we all knew SJ would crumble once the series got tight. I just don’t see FL that fragile.

I suspect EDM does win tonight. They are at home, the fans will be crying, based on recent history the refs will succumb on some level, and I think the Oilers win a close game.
However, at some point I do expect a response game from FL. I think they will decide they are done with the series and show up ready to take it. Whether that’s game 6 or 7 time will tell.

As a longtime hockey fan I think this series has been entertaining. I can’t say I am thoroughly enjoying it, as I despise watching the Oilers. But it has been fun to watch. In some respect I can’t say I’m disappointed that the series has been extended—more hockey means a shorter offseason!

How many times can we witness this happening with the oilers and still just call it "curious"? How many blatant high sticks, including those that should have been a 5 minute major with nothing caled before it goes beyond "curious"?

Looks like the “experts” on the ESPN site agree with you.
And, your lips to gods ears
Skinner isn't capable of stealing the game when it matters, for same reason I never considered Avs as contender with Georgiev . Kuemper is better than both of them
And experts on BSPN only watch highlights, not the full games, and if they do it's Pittsburgh, Boston or Detroit so I don't pay any attention to them.

I’m trying not to be too hard on refs that have shown for at least a few years that they aren’t up to the task. Because I think they are bad refs I genuinely attempt to not accuse them of being intentionally biased. Although some of the calls in the playoffs clearly favor EDM, I’m still trying to not dwell on them too much. I’m not saying I’m right. It’s just how I choose to look at it because I don’t want to add that to the negativity of enduring watching the Oilers.

Another thing to add in response is that this is the NHL’s prime time opportunity to showcase the game. There is of course going to be some sense from the league and ABC to have the series go as long as possible and from the telecast the other night the announcers were certainly onboard with the EDM love fest.
Obviously on some level this will filter down to the referees.
The missed calls on the Oilers, the protection from NHL Player Safety, is all part of the showcase.

The NHL will continue to try to grow a game that will never be more than it is. I do not want it to grow. Growth means more business and that is not good for the sport.

On a separate note, it would be sweet to see Florida win the Cup in front of those homer fans in Edmonton.
