Awful story today about Johnny Gaudreau. Very sad....unbelievable.

jom
Incredibly sad. Two days before their sister's wedding, which has been called off. They were both groomsmen to my understanding.

Wow, Oilers just signed Draisaitl to 8yrs at 14m per. Signed the deal on 8/16. I guess they signed him to that deal and then went to work on figuring out if they could keep Broberg, or Holloway.

Oh God, does that mean we have to deal with his PP shot, as well as his incessant entitled whining for 8 more years of 1st round playoffs?.. (I know, i know...who says the Kings make the playoffs?) . Was really hoping he would go elsewhere, it'll be interesting to see what Bouchard and then McD get on their next deals... going to be a lot to tie up in 3 players relatively soon. Guess their window is now.

As much as I do not admire Draisital’s approach to the game, this is a good signing for the oilers. Likely keeps him and McDavid together.

As for Bouchard, I hope they keep him. Of course he’s effective offensively but he’s really a liability on defense. I imagine it will be an overpayment. More years of Bouchard and Nurse are not helpful.

I know it is old and trite, but I had to anyway. :mhihi:

If they decide to pay Connor the biggest contract in NHL history (which it will be...given the 14M per year they just handed Leon) then Edmonton can give up any dream of winning a cup. Last year will be as close as they ever get. They simply won't be able to afford a decent team to put around them. I predict Connor McDavid retires as the greatest player in history who has never won a cup. ( I believe it's currently called the Heinrich Lindquist trophy.)

That was my first assumption as well. However a lot of that stuff will depend on how high the Cap goes. Mcdavid of course will get more than 14M. Whether they can pay two guys 30M and still have enough around them is going to be the question. Which is why I hope they overpay for Bouchard. And remember, Nurse is signed through 2030 @ 9.25M hit which I believe is an untradeable contract.

I sure hope so. Seems a lot is being pinned on this team to get it done next year, but the punditry takes for granted how hard it is to make the Finals two years in a row. It’s also been a lot of playoff hockey the last three seasons.

100% agree. The Oilers had an extremely easy path to the finals with the Kings, Vancouver who was playing a 3rd string goalie, and a worn-out Dallas team. I love this deal. Now extend Bouchard and McDavid for big bucks as well. Edmonton will be Toronto west. Or Penguins west. Bowman isn't wasting any time giving his top players the big bucks.
The best move IMO would have been a sign-and-trade for a star+picks/prospects but IDK how a GM does that with a team which was 1 win away from the Cup and with a fanbase who expects another huge season. Those are moves with an eye towards the future that one can only make in a video game.

Most likely this is the case, but Chicago was able to do it while paying Kane and Toews top dollar contracts. I think they will always have the advantage of forwards being willing to sign at a discount in order to play on a line with either McDavid or Drai - so that and good drafting could get them there.

Gotta expect they will have a win at all costs mentality over the next couple seasons though which provide their best chance to win it all.

Chicago had some young players that played somewhat significant roles and were on good contracts. St Louis just put a sizable dent in the Oilers' ability to do the same.
