The other teams thread

Getting them in the first round gives our players more time to recover (from the injuries the Edmonton goons will no doubt dish out) by the time the Finals come around haha j/k.

Edmonton has goons? Like whom? Maybe after this trade deadline, they might have a couple guys who can mix it up in Jones & Frederic, but other than that, who on the Oilers intimidates anyone?

Speed intimidates

Last year’s Oilers are not this year’s Oilers. They lost a lot of their speed over the summer, some of it to the Kings in Foegele. I think if the Kings meet them in the 1st round they have a legit shot at bouncing them this year. Now, the 2nd round is another story…..

and those were not big names at the time of their signings. I remember when Danault was signed, some lost their minds because he wasn't a goal scorer.
Very true that they weren’t big names. I guess the last big name free agent would be Kovalchuk.

Speaking of, if this team flames out again in the first round or fails to make the playoff, a few key players that should be traded offseason, or better yet, at the deadline next season are Danault and Moore. Particularly if the kings understand that it’s time to rebuild, they should look to pad the stats of these two guys throughout the season on the power play, and in top situations/minutes, in order to bring back first round pics for both. if it’s a full scale rebuild, I’d also ask Kopitar to take one for the team as an extremely coveted rental for whoever’s desperate to win the cup next year, although that’s probably unlikely given his legacy, and desire to only play for the Kings. It’s probably not worth mentioning Doughty, since he’s got two years left at a very high cap hit, although with the rising salary cap, someone might be willing to give serious overpayment if we retain half of his salary for the last two years. Also, the legacy thing. Those four players could give us a serious jump start on a rebuild, if the former two return to a decent scoring pace, and the latter two fend off Father Time for one more year and also concede to a last shot at glory elsewhere.

What if I were to tell you this year’s Kings team is worse than last year’s?

I would ask you by what metric you are making that claim. They’re a different team, yes, but not sure they’re worse. Maybe not better, either. Having said that, I think the Oilers are worse

#1 is overall scoring. #2 is PP. #3 Kopitar’s decline. #4 Danault’s decline. #5 Trevor Moore. #6 the play of the 4th line.

This year’s squad has significantly less offensive pop and goaltending on the road is much worse than last year.

If the Kings meet Edmonton in Round 1 and the Oilers have a healthy Top 6 it’ll be a very short series.

I'm sure if you watched the last few playoffs series between the Kings and Oilers you noticed that if things are not going the Oilers way they take a lot of cheap shots after the whistle. 3 seasons ago, when the series went to game 7 was probably the worst - but head shots after the whistle are not uncommon for them.

McDavid also seems to have a knack of injuring our players, especially Mikey. Oiler fans seem to take a lot of joy in it.

We’re about to get swept by the ChiLouis BlackBlues in 4, so you’re probably right about any potential encounters with Edmonton, come round one.

Of course the Flames and Canucks are going to OT. Also it hurts to hear the saddledome play “Hungry Like a Wolf” as Wolf makes another big save. I’ll let him go when one of the Kings’ young goalie prospects gives me a reason to.

EDIT: Canucks in shootout, 4 rounds. Both teams are now tied, Flames a game in hand. Both teams 6 pts behind the Kings. Kings have 1 and 2 games in hand respectively.
