I love the delusional TO media. Matthews is an extreme longshot to break the goal record. Both Wayne and Mario had over 500 after 623 games. Ovechkin has been a model of consistency just churning out 40+ goals season after season.

I know Ov beat Gretzky for the record but the 2 best pure goal scorers that I have watched are Ovechkin and Bossy.

It seems odd because we’ve really never experienced it, especially in this media age. It’s such a unique accomplishment that there isn’t a guide to show ā€œthis is how we honor this milestoneā€.
It’s definitely odd. We aren’t used to seeing a game stopped for 25 minutes!

I suppose you could continue playing and celebrate after the game is over, but that really seems to diminish it. It’s about goals, not games completed. So, I think you gotta do it in the moment. There just no reference that makes it seem anything but abnormal.
Would’ve been funny if the Islanders asked for an offsides replay after the ceremony.

I don’t remember who it was, but some player on the Canucks at the time said why are they all celebrating & making a big deal out of this when they lost the game. Which I thought was stupid because regular season wins & losses happen every day. Even winning a Stanley Cup happens once a year. But something like this happens once in a lifetime. Or for some of us twice in a lifetime. But anyway it’s extremely rare. And I don’t know if they did anything when Gordie Howe set the record. But they set the precedent of stopping mid-game when Gretzky broke the record, so now they do it again. Just like having the previous record holder be in attendance like Howe was & then Gretzky. Although Gretz didn’t spend as much time following as Howe did.

Actually there’s 2 things crazy about this moment. One is that for being an unbreakable record, I’ve seen it broken twice. The other is that when he tied the record on Friday, everyone knew he would break it the next game. Who thinks that? For any other player they can go 5 or 10 games without scoring & it’s normal. But for Ovi at his age the expectation was that he’s scoring the next game. That’s crazy.

I’d say Matthews is possible. He’s the only name I thought of when I wondered if any current players could beat Ovi’s record, and then I looked up his stats and they’re even more impressive than I realized. Six 40 goal seasons, two of them at 60 and 69 goals. His per game goal pace is higher than Ovi’s.

ONTH as you said Ovi’s consistency is the key. Ovi scoring over 40 goals as a 39 year old in a season he broke his leg is something so freakish that it really paints a picture of what’s going to be required to get close to what he’s accomplished.

Damn it, Vegas wins again by beating Seattle 2-1. Well, there's no point chasing them for first place in the division now for LA. All LA has to do now is to keep their second place pennant away from Deadmonton up to their last game this coming 17th of this month.

Deadmonton wins again, 4-2, against the Guppies. Well, we know that McPrincess is recently back in the roster after recovering from his injury and the Guppies are weak, but the Guppies did us Kings fans no favors (kinda sucks that I have to root for a division rival to beat another division rival in regulation, but hey, as the saying goes, "the enemy of my enemy is my friend").

Alright, Winnipeg. We Kings fans are pulling for you to beat Deadmonton in regulation tomorrow. Don't let us down, because a win against Deadmonton means our Kings are guaranteed to secure 2nd place in the Pacific Division this season.

The Rags are now officially eliminated from making it to the postseason with their latest loss to the Canes, 3-7. Also, the Biles lost to the Flyers, 3-4, which also crosses them out of the postseason as well. Suck it, NYC.

And what do you know, the Blue Jackets blew out and shut out the Caps, 7-0.

Well, the Leafs just beat their division rivals, the Habs, 1-0 in OT. It was a goalie duel until Marner put that puck past Dobes for the winner.
