The other teams thread

Well sh*t.. that likely means the Canes will definitely push like crazy to sign him to an extension. I’d say it’s even a foregone conclusion at this point.

I'm holding out hope that they son't resign him. And Chicago trades Hall, retains 50% of Rantanen's salary, and all they get for that is a 2025 3rd round pick. Pretty pathetic.

Agree but I'm not certain that their contribution to this trade is really worth much more than a 3rd. You could argue a 2nd rounder would be more appropriate though. Chicago is selling anyway so they dump Hall's salary and pick up half of Rantanen's for the rest of this year and get a 3rd. Not great but, IMO, isn't really worth much more.

Yeah, it’s a little hard to figure this out.
But let’s not discount the Taylor Hall part of this.
Hall has been on like 7 teams. As soon as he gets someplace the team wants to get rid of him.
I think the Hawks wanted Hall gone and this was how they could accomplish it. The third round pick was icing on the cake.
How Hall was ever the league MVP will forever be a mystery (and tells us how rooted the NHL is in east coast bias).

This will be a great way to truly gauge a few AAV for Rantanen when he hits FA. Really curious to see if he can keep up his strong performance this season without MacKinnon. If he can, the Kings need to go hard for him this offseason.

The rumors in the AVs forums is that he was asking for an AAV of $14m and the Avs offered him ~$11.25m AAV over 8 years. Based on what we have seen so far, a $14m AAV seems like a fair ask.

Wowza all Col got was an extra season of Necas.

Chi Hawk didn't get dick.

Is the economy affecting these teams at the gate

Obviously Caes are comfortable trying to extend Rants at 14 mil and they all in for Stanley's Cup.

I hope Rants tests FA and Blake throws 15 mil x 8 and a surfboard his way.

Kings couldn't afford him this year anyway.

They need to let Gav walk to do what he will ask and he is not elite offensively.

Use that $ for Rantanen.

I would see if anyone in east Canada wants Doughty.

Then ask him if he wants to go home hoser.

Same agent as Draisital so the ask makes sense.
Avs have to sign Makar in near future too.
I certainly expect the Canes to press for an extension. Rantanen and Aho are tight.
If Rantanen is available the Kings have to try. But I wouldn’t ignore Necas if AVs don’t extend him before end of ‘26.

14M doesn't seem like a very fair ask to me. Has Mikko driven his own line line LD29 or is he Robin to MacK's Batman? The salary is very high for a winger. If I'm the Avs GM, I would have dumped Mikko for the best package that I could get as well. Paying 14M for a 12M guy doesn't seem like that much of an overpayment to keep your guy but then you end up dressing some replacement level guy on the 3rd line rather than signing a guy like Foegele who costs a couple mil extra but is great up and down the lineup.

Actually, what I am reading and seeing, the Columbus Blue Jackets are a better team that I was assuming they were this year. But even when they are legit, I have a hard time seeing them as good because you know, Ohio, lol.

Obviously I don’t see enough to know about the Jackets but I was somewhat impressed with them. They seemed to compete hard, seemed pretty relentless, played an attacking offensive game. Good sized goalie, were pretty tough around the net defensively.

Kings seemed a bit snake-bitten. Fiala’s shot that seemed to land on the shoulder…

I’m not sure if the Kings are in a slump scoring-wise or if it’s just the breaks. Pucks that were going in earlier aren’t now.
But I also wonder if we are seeing a repeat of last year. Early last season the Kings were scoring but then when the games got tighter and tougher the scoring dried up.

Time will tell of course. But I do think it’s obvious that the Kings need to get someone who can be a consistent presence in the crease. And I have been a believer that the first PP unit needs Danault, who understands how to play in that area.

I agree for the most part, but at a $14m AAV for 8 years there is no doubt Rantanen's contract will become a deal at some point (likely within 2-3 years) so it's not horrible. I'd personally offer him the $14m AAV if I were the Kings - for CO that's a bit harder given the contract of MacKinnon and future extension of Makar. He could tank without Mac, though, and substantially lower his value in the process.

Side note: Most balked when Washington signed Ovi to his contract extension but I think it is nearly unanimously agreed to have been a good move which paid large dividends over its duration. Players will keep setting new bars as salary caps increase and the dollar erodes due to inflation.

Can't look back, however, a huge mistake by Blake and the Kings will pay for it for a while.
I’m hardly defending Blake and the short-term view of the trade shows us that it was not a great deal by any stretch.
But I still don’t necessarily object to the strategy or mindset behind it. It actually did make sense to acquire a player will the size and skill of PLD.

In the end it basically ended up being a Gabe for Darcy swap. Yes, the Kings gave up Iafallo and Kupari as well but have found better players to replace them. And the second-round pick was also included.

Given the near term situation with goalies in the organization at the time the swap was not really a bad outcome. And good to recall that Vilardi had been in the organization for a while and had one productive season due to his inability to play.

It would be nice to have Vilardi here still. But he isn’t. And Keumper wouldn’t be here and we would have who in goal?

I guess this is a trade that we will all remember. But good to remember also that we just never know how things will play out.

For now, this is the team we have. I suspect they will add something at the deadline. But this team is in a good spot with Darcy in goal. And we can’t ignore that part.
