The other teams thread

It feels like the Kings are going to have to win out to catch Vegas, meaning it's extremely unlikely it will happen (even though it's only 5 points).

Sounds like a significant head injury. His playoff status is now up in the air.
So sad for Gabe - of all the ways to get concussed, a bouncing puck. Looked like he was finally going to hit a full season. He’s now 25 without having achieved that yet.

If he was still on this team the discussion about his next contract and whether to cut ties and trade would be something. Still hurts to not maximize the asset but don’t envy the Jets front office on some tough negotiations. Would have to think they’ll want a shorter deal than he’ll want to sign.

Caps lock up Chychrun for 8 years. It’s a great deal for both sides.

9M a year for a 20+ minute a night, 40-50 point dman.
That seems high but Washington must really like what they have in him. For a career -45 defenseman who has previously topped out at 41pts, it really seems like he cashed in on team success and the inflated numbers this season that come with it.

$7m AAV seems more realistic but time will tell.

So in an "ideal world" the Kings trade for Chychrun (probably would include Spence) and resign him at 9.5, resign Roy at 6, don't resign Gavrikov:
Mikey-DD
Chychrun-Roy
Moverare/Edmundson-Clarke

This would look spicy. But not sure if the financials would work...probably no Joel in this scenario, probably Englund.

But...hindsight...

He’s a 27 year old 1st pairing D man. $9 million is on the low end for #1/2 Dmen.

That actually ties him for the 10th highest defenseman AAV in the league currently (tied with Makar and Hamilton). Obviously pay tends to go up each year, but this seems a bit optimistic.

I should’ve noted “going forward”. The cap is increasing 23% over the next 3 season. If the league expands within the next 5 years (it will) the cap will go up even higher. Locking in a $9M salary before it goes up is good value for the Caps if he stays healthy.

I agree. 6x9 or 8x8 seems like a more realistic contract. The Caps see him as the heir apparent to Carlson whos 8x8 contract is ending soon. That is a lot of money for a guy who has had a great 65 games in DC.

Yeah 2-3 years for now that seems like a safe projection, I just don't think the Caps had to pay that price today. That said, they have a history of making long-term contracts look good and it could end up being a deal if Chychrun can stay healthy and keep playing around the level he has this season.

Eh, he's as much a proven 1st pairing D-man as Brock Faber is, who is in a "big contract sophomore slump".

The fact Doughty is tied for 2nd on that list is just bonkers.

But that's much more bonkers not due to DD being overpaid, but due to NHL lacking premium D talent or simply undervaluing it. All the money seems to go to forwards.

In the top 20 how many won the Cup while being the team's top 2 D-man? DD, Makar, Pietrangelo, Carlson, Hedman, Orlov...and they're all ancient except for Makar. Have I missed someone?

Is the "you build a winner from the back end out" philosophy really gone? Or is it that the most talented hockey players simply want to be forwards nowadays? Maybe the era of D-men "idols" is truly gone (Lidstrom, Niedermayer, Stevens...heck, Rob Blake, too)...

Yeah I thought that was interesting too. When you look at the top 11 players with the highest AAV (24-25 season) only three are defenseman and both are long time vets. I think salaries may soon start to catch up for defenseman but it does appear forward pay is prioritized over defenseman pay which is somewhat wild to me. Others further on the list like Sanderson are on their first big contract extension so maybe they eventually catch up?

Oilers are getting their asses handed to them by the Stars. 4-0 in the 2nd period. Robertson with the hatty already. Go Stars!
