My top Savatage songs continued:

51 - Mentally Yours

The first minute or so makes the song, with Jon Oliva singing a niiice song with some pretty piano, then we descend into madness with the less polished vocals and Criss Oliva shredding in the back. I just love the contrast and how it fits with the subject. Also, Wacholz just pounding the hell out of the drums on the build ups like he is angry with them.

50 - The Whip

This is the only song from The Dungeons Are Calling, the second Savatage album (recorded the time as the first one, though), to make my list. The first three CDs are "just" straightforward metal, but listening to the whole disc again, it is pretty darn good for that. It's just that the albums Paul O'Neill produced are so incredible that the first four get overshadowed (also, that fourth album is not very good). The Dungeons Are Calling is a semi-concept album about drug addiction, so The Whip might not just be about what it sounds like it is about. But it's probably about that too. The Whip is a simple, quick metal song that just grooves straight through, with the usual something extra from Criss Oliva's guitar. This recording (the only one I could find) seems to have the bass turned up, but I think it actually makes the song that much better.

New Aphex Twin album is great! It's probably a good album to get newbies into his stuff without freaking them out too much. Has an Analords vibe with more production trickery.

49 - Agony And Ecstasy

Just before I get to one of the songs with the much more refined vocals of Zak Stevens, here is one of Jon Oliva's harsher performances. The Streets album makes the most appearances by far on my list, and for good reason - it is their best album. Streets is a concept album and Agony And Ecstacy comes in when the main character, a former drug addict, is being tempted to go back to it after his attempt to rebuild his life suffered a violent setback. The song is from the point of view of the drugs, calling to him. The screeching guitar and nonstop drive of the song really work for conveying the ride the drugs are offering and build up to a fantastic but quick shredding solo at the end of the song. And that final calm, quiet "Just remember, if you ever need me, I'm here" is major bonus points.

Goin old school. Desperado/Widowmaker was Dee Snider's post TS gig...Clive Burr(r.i.p) and Bernie Torme' Gillan's guitar player. Raw, still sounds good.

and speaking of Torme'

Phil LA GUNS Lewis on this'un. Very underappreciated little gem. Thank you for guiding my formative years KERRANG!!!

I finally got to see Within Temptation last night. Sharon Den Adel's voice is even more beautiful than the sound of the Ducks getting "hey hey, goodbye"ed in their own building.

Club Nokia, nice place. The number of jagoffs holding their cellphones up to record bouncy video with mediocre audio so they can get 5 YouTube hits was staggering though. Venues really need to come up with a way to automatically charge these people's phones with that new Apple Wave technology when they do that.
