Punk...

Old & slow kp! Lol

Hey, you gotta respect your elders! It's like watching living history!

And not all of it is slow!

And when I get old I hope am as tough and badass as them!

(It should be noted that Jock is a bit older than the rest of the lads. If memory serves me correct, when G.B.H. started they needed a guitarist and Jock came in on loan. They were in their late teens and he was mid or late 20's. He ended up staying.)

Lol. Speaking of old & slow, Paul Weller is playing 3 shows in October. Tell Dana & let's meet up.

I'll try my best to make it!

And on another note: Ok, so I'm only guy going to G.B.H. tomorrow. I get it, but if any of you do go., look for the dude in the Kings hat and a leather jacket with with the Adicts on the back and say "hi".

A quick gig report:

I have to say I like the Observatory, pretty cool place to catch a show. It was absolutely packed, this show brought out the usual suspects: old school street punks like myself but I was surprised how many young people where there and how enthusiastic they were. Huge pit, lots of stage diving, just like the good ol' days. But unlike the "good ol' days' I did not see one fight and instead a phalanx of riot cops waiting for us after the show, there were two of three cop cars in various locations with officers casually standing there trading pleasantries with people. One wished me and my pals a "good night" when we passed by.

The bands were in fact "old", as Dave noted, but they were not slow, ok maybe sometimes.

Conflict was, well Conflict, still pissed off and railing against the worlds injustice. They were not as old as I expected, but it must be noted they always had a revolving door as far as band members and outside vocalist Steve Ignorant I did not know who the rest of the lads were. Gone were leather, bristles and braces, gone were the crazy punk rock haircuts. Steve's hair was a little messy but all of them could probably walk down a street and you wouldn't notice them. Two of them wore button up shirts. But they rocked! "Take back what's yours!"

G.B.H. brought down the house. They can still bring it. Outside of one song, everything form the set was from the "Clay Years" (Clay Records was their first label), the early hard street punk years. The crowd was into it, things at times a little crazy, lots of people jumping on stage to stage dive, sing a couple seconds with Colin, take a selfie with one of the band members mid song. Stage security had their hands full but no one got thumped or tossed out. It was pretty easy going and band seemed to enjoy it. A couple jokes were made about how old they are and how they still tour the world and play punk rock shows. Colin still has that stage presence and Jock and Ross still rip it up. Scott, G.B.H.'s longest serving drummer, is awesome. It was good to see them, because at this stage who knows if you will see them again.

I saw three or four other guys in Kings hats and had a good chat with one of them, we both commiserated about the Kings missing the playoffs and how much the Ducks need to lose or our lives will be miserable. A few others gave me kudos for my Kings hat, even the dude working the G.B.H merch booth! He said how different the playoffs are without the Kings. Not one Duck hat or shirt. It could be because they were playing but also I speculate that Ducks fans are simply not tough enough to go to a show like this! Blink 182, New Found Glory, Offspring? Yeah, they show up in the flat billed Ducks hats and Affliction shirts. But a show with G.B.H. and Conflict? No way! Way too scary and rough for them!

Anyway, a good night and a fun show!

soooooooo I saw X last night and they were ****ing amazing live. John Doe and Exene sounded just as good as ever. they're playing 4 shows at the Observatory in Santa Ana in July, so I'll definitely be going to at least one of those.

that was my first time going to Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach as well. kind of a weird venue...it's more of a restaurant/bar that happens to have a stage. it's a tiny little place, which is super fun, but the space is mostly taken up by tables and there's not a lot of space for people to stand. I think it worked for X, but it's definitely more suited to mellower shows. the sound was surprisingly good though.

i saw frank turner play in a little nondescript bar in hollywood on thursday and it was rad! it was a secret/surprise/pop-up show of which he tweeted clues for people to decipher and show up to later that night. he played it for free, drank whiskey and beer and the entire room sang along. it was great!

he also played a free in-store at salzer's record store in ventura on friday, but 1) that is too far of a drive for me on a holiday weekend, 2) no booze and 3) probably a shorter set than the bar room show.

Ok, So here is an "oldie but goodie".....

As I have said before I have to be in the mood to listen to Discharge, usually a pissed off and "down" sort of mood. But of late I have been appreciating them more. I have actually listened to them in a good mood and enjoyed it. Strange, that never used to be the case. But now?

Is it a midlife crisis? Some guys get a younger wife/girlfriend (scumbags) or a sports car (d-bags, depending on the car) but perhaps I just listen to harder/older stuff. I always despised the "harder-core-than-thou" set but am I becoming one of them? I hope not! But I find myself listening to bands like this more than I used to, and enjoying it more than I used to.

Weird! Am I getting "harder" in my old age? I always had stuff like Discharge, Conflict, Angelic Upstarts, Varukers, Agnostic Front, ect ect.... in my collection but they were not frequently played, like I said, I had to be in the mood. But I listen to them a bit more now. Especially Discharge of late: I like them more now then when I was young. Strange really, for when I was younger I was tougher, more hard core' liberty spikes, jack boots painted leather. I would not hesitate to fight at a show or on the street. Now? Fight? Oh good gracious no!!! Normal hair, husband, father, responsible, reasonable dude. And yet......

"Old and slow" as my good pal Dave will charge and he is right! Metallic riffs, non-punk vocals, repetitive lyrics, pretty unusual but somehow beloved by old school punks! Interesting facts: this song was covered by Metallica and a little while ago the BBC did a doc on Discharge and they could not find Cal, the vocalist. In this day and age no one knows if he is still alive, he simply disappeared.

So anyway, enough blather! Discharge!

Ugh this show sold out before I even found out about it! Bummed as they were playing the constellation room (the smaller of the two rooms at the observatory), which I think is where you saw against me right? I used to see them a bunch when I was in college in san diego. Always a good time.

Millencolin apparently only plays the US like every 7 years or so now. so I got special permission from the wife to go.
