The Pacific Division Thread

High floor low ceiling ass team. All this is extra frustrating because this roster is a mobile puck moving D-man and a goal scoring Center away from top of the Pacific.
Yeah the Kings, and the league, is pretty nuts this season. Crazy to think the Kings are currently a top 3 defense in the league, in terms of goals against, and a bottom 3 offense in the league, in terms of goals for. Adding in a goal scoring center and mobile (offense-generating) defenseman and they'd be towards the top of the league (given the high degree of parity we are seeing between teams so far this season).

It'll be interesting to see what happens during the 2nd half of the season when that high degree of parity across the league begins to fade and the buyer/sellers emerge. Gotta believe some teams will start their tank campaign for the 1st/2nd overall pick as this seems to be shaping into a pretty top heavy draft.

The real tough part about looking for teams falling out of the race is every team in the East is a 3 game winning streak away from a playoff spot.

I can’t see any of them circling the wagons and going into sell mode unless something drastic happens.

If Holland’s only options are finding a trading partner in the West then the price of a rental is going to skyrocket and it dashes the hopes of finding a longer term option this season. That kind of trade will only happen during the summer.

Although we've come. To the end of the road. Still I can't let go. It's unnatural. You belong to me. I belong to you.

This is my relationship with this team, yes. Hiller is still here, yet so am I.

If the Kings do end up getting an opportunity to draft a top 10 pick in this year's draft,it wouldn't suprise me,that Luc and Holland would find a way to screw that up
Always a possibility. I am hopeful Holland continues to just defer to Yannetti for drafting. At this stage in his career he may be more deferential on that front.

Agreed, summer would be ideal. The question is will a target be available (and realistic to sign) this summer or will Ken need to pay high to get the player he wants via trade.

If standings stay close like this, then I agree it's likely best to wait until summer (it also may be a good idea for the Kings to sell during the latter part of the season if parity remains high).

Ducks lost 9 in a row
I mentioned to a friend of mine, and they asked are they going to fire the coach after losing g thier 9th in a row?.. I said probably not because it is coach Q,and
this is a young team with skill and only a couple points out of a playoff spot.

I should hope so. Holland was not known for building teams but sustaining them...much like Brian Burke. It was Jimmy Devellano in Detroit that built the team...for example.

I didn’t know that about Detroit but it checks out he was smart enough to let someone else really cover that. People criticize drafting in EDM while he was there to which I say what about DET? Didn’t have a high draft pick for 20 years.

KH didn't have a lot of draft high picks...he just sustained what he had and did a great job. Just to be accurate Holland didn't become GM until after Detroit won their first Cup in this era in 1997. So it was pretty much JD and maybe Bryan Murray that build the team.

JD was also responsible for a lot of the NYI dynasty in the early 80s although he was never GM there. IMO, JD is probably one of the greatest builders in NHL history just behind Sam Pollack and Bill Torrey.

Thanks for this, gives me more background than I had and still bodes well for Holland to give Yanetti room to have a strong say.

From what I’ve heard about this draft high end talent is still available in the top 15, and NHL talent is available deep in the first round.

Yet at the same time, many here are stating the Kings have missed on their top draft picks the last few years. If that is the case, it is wise continuing to allow Yanetti to take the reigns?

Not arguing it, just curious to hear other's opinions.

I know it's within the Pacific Division, and he has had a couple of bleak years, but would you take a swing at #40 on the Canucks? This guy was once a powerhouse and he's only 27. Pettersson needs to get out of Vancouver. Kings have no one in the system and Elias may be comparatively cheap. Too much like PLD? Or worth a shot?

He'd be a good replacement for Kopi when he retires. Even with the risk, I'd take a shot on him if the price of acquiring him was fair.

He would have to be a reasonable deal after under-performing these last 2 seasons. Canucks need players to keep the puck out of the net. Think they'd take Doughty?😀 Kings also have Woolley, Brzusty and the 2 goalie kids. A revived Petterssonn, QB, Turc and Sammy could be pretty strong down the middle.

You should dig up the documentary called The Russian Five. Made in 2019 I believe. It details the rise of the Detroit Red Wings under Devellano’s guidance, and how the organization helped sneak their Russian stars out of the Soviet Union. Very cloak and dagger stuff, and wildly entertaining, even for someone who despised the Red Wings for the better part of two decades. As for Devellano, the guy is like a cartoon character out of the late 70’s, but he is absolutely one of the best builders that professional hockey has ever known.

If the price is right, yes. He's this year's Eichel. Sure, may not pan out as well, but the Kings are well past the point of playing it safe if they don't intend to rebuild.
