I wasn't very big on the 11th Anniversary, but for some reason the Sublimely Self Righteous tasted better....

Im not knocking the Union Jack IPA at all. it's great by itself, but if you were to drink Kern River Brewing's Just Outstanding IPA next to Firestone's, well, you should find a huge difference. the JO IPA is much crisper and the drinkability is easier than its counterpart. and I found the UJ IPA a bit more hoppy than I had realized.

both were from the tap.

by the way, I think Thirteen-Ten, while he had already sampled the JO last weekend, may have had a UJ at some point in time. I would like to hear his opinion.

Well damn, I guess I'm going to have to get my butt to Kernville to try it! Thanks for the clarification (you too Thirteen-Ten). Always like getting new recommendations.

Kona Brewing Longboard Island Lager – As with most lagers, it’s light and crisp with a golden color. Not very strong in aroma or flavor. More on the mild side. The label says that is a bit more hoppy than other brews, but it’s not as hoppy as a Sierra Nevada. Still there is a slight hop bitterness in the finish. With the malt backbone and the slight hop finish the taste is very tea-like to me which is unusual but very pleasing. That tea characteristic makes this beer more refreshing than my usual heavier fare.

Completely missed this but yes i did try some of the Union Jack from Firestone. Its good, but not very smooth. I prefer an IPA that has the crisp taste but isnt so harsh going down, makes for a good beer to drink all around, whether for dinner or just to sip on. I still find that the best IPA i had while i was taste testing up there was the KRBC IPA.

A top the list of my favorite beers:

Moose Drool Brown Ale
ABV: 5.1%
Big Sky Brewing Co.
Missoula, Montana

Very good Brown Ale. If you are into Newcastle, you will like this beer. Tastes a little heavier and richer than Newcastle. Worth a try if you like Brown Ale's.

Another beer i gave a shot at from Big Sky is called Trout Slayer Ale (ABV: 4.7%).

I was attracted to this beer because of the label and name seeing as i myself am a trout slayer :). Tried it for the first time about 20 minutes ago and had to give it a recommendation. Very fresh clean beer with a crisp finish to drink any time of the day, especially when you are slaying those trout.

I was just at the Big Sky Brewery last month. I agree with the Moose Drool but I wasn't impressed with the Trout Slayer. I had a real nice ale down in Hamilton, MT at the Bitterroot Brewery - the Sawtooth Ale. Our Beers

Nothing really too impressive about Trout Slayer, its just a normal ale. Figured i would give it a recommendation for those willing to try something new.

Yesterday evening I had the "Just Outstanding IPA" from Kern River Brewing Company. I must agree with the label, it is exactly Just Outstanding! I'm really not into IPAs anymore, but the smell of this brew gave me an instant boner. The only IPAs that come to mind with an equally brilliant nose, are double IPA's rather - Hop Stoopid, both Plinys, and White Knuckle.

The body on this beer is so incredibly light when you take into account the wonderful hop aroma and bitterness and overall the beer is as clean and crisp as a no wiper. I would totally take this one over most mainstream IPAs on the market, except maybe the Sierra Nevada Torpedo.

Don't pass this one up folks!

awesome. let's get the ball rollin on getting the JO IPAs distributed further past the Grapevine!

btw, the Torpedo IPA is a bit harsher if you drink it side by side with the JO.

Anyone know where I can find Deschutes - The Abyss? I've gone to a couple bevmos (Pasadena, Empire Center, and Fullerton), but came up empty. Does Vendome carry The Abyss?

You can try www.liquidsolutions.biz

Mailorder is one of the best ways to acquire rare beers like that, and luckily they've got the 2007 in stock! Honestly, the last release of The Abyss is NOTHING in comparison to the previous years. Its almost as if they mass produced the newest one, while jeopardizing everything great about it in the process. I suppose the recent release is still a good beer, but not a great beer like it once was. Happy hunting!

I had Port's Older Viscosity last night. What a heavenly brew this could have been! However, the carbonation was consistently avoid, which seems to be the norm for much of the Port/Lost Abbey beers over the last year. It really is a shame, because the flavor and nose on this beer were absolutely marvelous! With even a lamb's pube of carbonation, this one could have been up there with the greatest Russian Imperial Stouts. I know that beer advocate classifies this one as a Double/Imperial stout, but I beg to differ. It's got RIS written all over it.

Just my opinion, but Port > The Lost Abbey.

Last time I was at Bevmo in Woodland Hills (about two weeks ago) they had cases of Black Butte and Abyss if I remember correctly. Haven't tried those beers yet so I didn't pay a whole lot of attention.
