Trade Deadline Thread

Sounds like the asking price for Rantanen was too steep...think Moore, Clarke, Greentree, 1st round pick plus other pieces...if the rumors are correct.
Plus?! Nope too steep before the plus for a rental. Andy Strickland also said Rantanen didn’t list LA as a city he’d be willing to extend with.

Edit: I see a few of us are reading the same stuff today.

Pull out Greenie, and swapping out Spence for Clarke, and I’d make that deal, even on a rental. Extension would be a huge bonus.

Noooo Soucy to NYR for just a third! Still would rather have him than Edmundson. Has been on my wishlist for years.
No way. The guy is -13, second worst on his team. Ed is +17 and second on the team and almost all of that with BC not exactly a defensive stalwart (yet).

If Blake knows this is his last run, maybe he goes all in and at the same time, destroys the Kings future, if there was one.

The silence out of the Kings board room this trade deadline is deafening. Then again, any acquisitions made at this point would likely be huge overpayments. This is probably the team Blake is going with

If this is about improving the Kings I don’t see the deadline as time to optimize the roster. Typically deadline moves are to load up for the playoffs, unload a contract, get assets for players who will leave, or acquire draft picks.
If the org feels they are not serious contenders they would sit tight and improve in the off-season where it is more about making hockey trades and less about seeing who will pay elevated prices.

I expect lots of negativity if the Kings don’t make a move or a big move. But I would advise waiting til the off-season for the moves where the targets are not limited to a subset of players (last year of contracts or players with term that selling club wants to be fee of). Of course, there are exceptions and deadline deals can make sense, but it’s not all that common.
I believe that the off-season allows for discussion of more players than are available at the deadline. A playoff team is unlikely to move a player at the deadline who might actually be available in the offseason.

If I felt the Kings were serious contenders I would want to see them load up. While this team has played well at times against the better teams, the last month and a half or so has diminished my expectations and confidence.
I think trying to make a deal to keep up with the Joneses is just not prudent, and is the opposite of what will maximize the assets.

I’m not lecturing anyone, and we are all allowed to feel how we feel, and are entitled to our own thoughts, feeling and opinions. And we are all able to express them.
And if somehow the Kings make a good deal in the next 18 hours I’ll be as happy as anyone. I just want to see some caution about the process. In short, it’s not mandatory to make deals because there is a deadline.

Lecture away! You are preaching to the choir.

IMO, there are 2 times when it is easiest to improve your team-- draft day and the trade deadline. So Blake should definitely be working the phones. But he should only be trying to make an honest hockey trade and not a rental. A big move for 2 months of Moose is just burning all of our assets for nothing. But if I can pick up Ryan O'Reilly (leader with 2 years to go on a reasonable contract), I'm exploring it. Getting Tuch from Buffalo is a real hockey deal. And if we're confident in the Kings staff to rehab distressed assets (nope, thats FL not us), then look into Mittelstadt or Cozens if the asking price is low and the staff thinks the payoff is worth the salary slot. Likewise, they could to get Zegras on the cheap and reunite him with Turc if the price is cheap.

So work the phones and look for hockey deals. If it is a seller's market, then wait until the summer. Like you said, it is not mandatory to make a deadline deal. Sometimes the best deals are the ones that you don't make.

As much as I want Blake to do SOMETHING to improve this team, I kind of get that the trade deadline isn’t the easiest time to do so.

Colorado just gifted the Islanders a top prospect (and former 1:st round pick), a 26 or 27 first rounder and a 3:rd rounder for Brock Nelson, a 33 year old UFA rental… 🤯🤯🤯

I get that Colorado is going for it and that NYI retained half of his salary. And I know he’s considered a great leader, a true competitor and in many ways what Kings would need but I still don’t want Blake to top that kind of overpayment!

Not much time left, we should get Quickie back and let him retire as a King! There's a couple of players Kings could give up if Rangers want. The Kings season is over, its been real, its been fun but it has not been real fun. GO KINGS GO!

Was he directed/given orders to just get the team into the PO's. Is being "competitive" all that is required of him? The Kings front office talks about building a winner and hoisting another cup, but their actions consistently say otherwise.

Of course. Welcome to the corporate world of pro sports, where financial bottom line is all that matters.

People that like coporate pro sports would tell you you can be glad the Kings owners are willing to spend to the cap...
